PROSPECT PARK
One of the most famous parks in New York, Prospect Park is to Brooklyn as Central Park is to Manhattan: an oasis in the middle of the borough. Designed by Central Park's dynamic duo, Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, Prospect Park is intentionally less maintained than its manicured Manhattan counterpart: Broken branches litter the paths and the grass is far from neat. Home to the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Lefferts Homestead, Prospect Park also offers a band shell and concert grove, a boathouse, a Wildlife Center, a carousel with hand-carved horses, a tennis center, and the Kate Wollman Rink. The grand, rambling Long Meadow can host several ballgames at once, and the trees encircling the meadow provide perfect shade for relaxation. On warm weekends, families set up barbecues and volleyball games. Along the shores of Prospect Lake, kids feed the swans, while pedal boats rented from the nearby boathouse crisscross the water all spring and summer. And best of all, from within the park, one can see no telltale skyscrapers that detract from the pastoral idyll.
