From the archives: March 17, 2011

Thursday, March 17 is St. Patrick's Day, and no one does it bigger than New York (well, except maybe Dublin). This year the parade starts at 11am at 44th Street and 5th Avenue and runs north to 79th Street. Hit that, then get ready to hit the bottle at one of NY's finest Irish bars, where the parties will be in full-swing all day and night. And on Friday when you roll into work smelling like a hobo, at least it'll be moderately acceptable for once. (Photo: St. Patty's Pub Crawl)

Bop to live Irish music all day at this midtown haunt with homey accents (antique woodwork, stone floors, stained glass and vintage photos) that will rouse you into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

    15 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003 (map)

Lines are known to form as early as 6am outside NY's oldest sawdust-covered pub on St. Patrick's Day. This East Village institution--which just celebrated its 157th year in business--offers only two brews (McSorley's Dark or McSorley's Light), but luckily, that's all you need.

  3. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Molly's

287 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10010 (map)

This Gramercy-area pub is fit for a visit whenever you crave a taste of things Gaelic. Go for the old-school jukebox, the crowd and the generally laid-back environment.

519 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10016 (map)

Paddy Reilly's is located in the city, but between the horseshoes, barrels and old-fashioned water pumps decorating the space, it feels like a slice of the Old Country. Irish bands will perform back-to-back sets from 12pm until 4am on St. Patrick's Day.

  5. 5 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Spike Hill

64 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10003 (map)

The Village Pourhouse might not be an Irish pub, but they'll be celebrating St. Patrick's Day with a proper nod to leprechauns. Purchase a ticket to participate in one of three pub crawls taking place on March 11th ($10, in midtown only), 12th ($20) and March 17th ($15). Or pay $30 to join all three rounds of booze-addled fun. Participating bars include SideBAR, Slate and many others, and your ticket entitles you to take advantage of assorted drink specials, food discounts and free admission to NY venues charging a cover. Tickets are available on the Pourhouse's website.
