Cookie Monsters
Updated: July 23, 2009
When it comes to desserts, the cookie is the total package: cheap, easy to make and impervious to seasonality. But in New York, we believe a little decadence can make even the best sweet treat that much better. So with all due respect to the traditional chocolate chip cookie, we've assembled a list of the city's most super-charged biscuits. From the snootiest cookie snob to the most casual crumb bum, we've got something for every lover of sweets.(Photo: Bacon chocolate chip cookies at RUB)
Looky, Looky We've Got Cookies

Bouchon Bakery

Thomas Keller is arguably one of the greatest chefs on earth, and with a culinary empire that boasts a crown jewel as magnificent as Per Se, you wouldn't think he'd have time to think about cookies. Luckily, that couldn't be further from the truth. The Thomas Keller Oreo (or "TKO") is our favorite treat from Keller's Bouchon Bakery at the Time Warner Center. It's a rich chocolate souffle sandwich cookie filled with white chocolate ganache--and it's a true knockout. Now if only you could find Oreos like this in the cookie aisle.
Jacques Torres Chocolate

When you're a renowned French chef who's earned two Michelin stars, chances are you make one hell of a chocolate dessert. Jacques Torres' mudslide cookie recipe requires 38 ounces of chocolate, which is roughly equivalent to 10 regular chocolate bars per batch. Between the chewy texture and smattering of walnuts, this confection has an almost brownie-like feel.

When it comes to baked goods, bigger doesn't always translate to better--but in the case of this Upper West Side bakery's giant chocolate chip walnut cookies, it does. A perfectly crisp exterior gives way to a moist center full of gooey semi-sweet chocolate and crunchy chopped walnuts. Bring along a hungry friend and a gallon of milk because these fist-sized cookies weigh-in at almost half a pound.
Momofuku Milk Bar

David Chang's East Village dessert laboratory pushes the envelope with a number of outrageous confectionary combinations, but our favorite is Milk Bar's compost cookie, made with both chocolate and butterscotch chips coupled with ground pretzels and potato chips. The contrast of textures and sweet and salty flavors creates the only dessert that could ever compete with Momofuku's famous pork buns.
RUB BBQ

The house-cured triple-smoked Berkshire bacon at RUB is so good that it simply had to find its way onto the dessert menu. Tiny cubes of the bodacious bacon are worked into a cookie dough recipe that even Grandma would envy. The result is a bacon chocolate chip cookie that represents the greatest marriage of baking and barbecue since the advent of baked beans. It may sound questionable, but just wait 'til you take a bite.
