Let's face it: Looks matter--especially in a city like New York. Whether you're interviewing for a new job or hoping to grab the attention of your crush, a new 'do and a mani/pedi goes a long way toward helping you stand out. The voting period for the 2009 Best of Citysearch: Spa and Beauty campaign is officially underway. Click on the Best of Citysearch tab at the top of the page and then go vote for your favorite salons and spas through Dec. 2. To get you started, here are five of my own favorites.

Editor's Picks

  1. 1 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Avalon Salon & Day Spa

112 Christopher Street, New York, NY 10014 (map)

BRAZILIAN WAX: Ever since the trend of going hairless "down there" became popular, I've visited countless spas in search of the perfect wax. Agata at Avalon Salon & Day Spa is tops when it comes to hair removal in the nether regions. She's meticulous (finishing the job with tweezers and a dash of baby powder) and kind--which is crucial, because pleasant chitchat is the only thing that can soothe the pain of a Brazilian bikini wax.

  2. 2 Thompson Street Nails

137 Thompson St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

MANI/PEDI: At this no-frills Soho salon, you won't feel rushed by manicurists and pedicurists who are already eyeing the next customer before your base coat has been applied. The staff is exceedingly friendly, and offers the standard quickie shoulder rub at the end. But more importantly, the prices are below average for New York (and Soho in particular), at just $25 for a manicure and pedicure.

  3. 3 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Astor Place Hair Designers

2 Astor Pl, New York, NY 10003 (map)

HAIRCUT: Sometimes you don't want to plan your next haircut a month in advance, as required by most fancy New York salons. At Astor Place, it's possible to get a stellar cut for around $20 in under an hour, without an appointment. So whether you want a Mohawk or a pixie cut, if you're short on time and money, this downtown fixture has your cut covered.

  4. 4 4 Star Rating: Recommended Aveda Salon

456 West Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (map)

HAIR HIGHLIGHTS: Once you choose to highlight your hair, you're pretty much a customer for life; after all, no one wants unsightly roots. Aveda uses all-natural products, so you can feel better about all that dyeing. The colorists consult with and list to the customer, which means the finished product is always just right. Better yet, junior stylists provide patrons with complimentary hand massages during color treatments.

  5. 5 3 Star Rating: Average Exhale
    Read Reviews

980 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10021 (map)

MASSAGE: Exhale truly is an urban oasis. Between the peaceful background music, the relaxed attitude of the staff and the serene decor (think neutrals and trickling water fountains), it's a paradise for the busy Manhattanite looking to indulge in some R&R. It's not inexpensive ($120 for an hour-long, full-body massage), but relaxation like this is worth it--your body will thank you even if your wallet doesn't.
