We all know that cupcakes are New York City's favorite baked good trend--they are available on almost every street corner. This list, just in time for Valentine's Day, brings you the best of a very special type of cupcake--Red Velvet! While everyone credits the South as the origin for this sinfully moist cake, red velvet made its debut in NYC at the Waldorf Astoria back in the 1920s. It's no wonder so many bakeries around town are cooking up exceptional renditions of this classic recipe.
*In case you were wondering what makes red velvet cake so amazing, you should know that it is chocolate and vanilla cake batter mixed with red food coloring (along with a bunch of other secret ingredients depending on the baker). The yellow cake base accounts for the sweetness, the chocolate adds to the richness and moisture while the red coloring adds that attention grabbing hue. Red Velvet cake is traditionally served with a butter Roux icing or a cream cheese buttercream frosting.

The secret is out! Situated on the only block left that still bares evidence German town ever existed, Two Little Red Hens bakery is a hidden jewel that serves up the ultimate in Red Velvet cake. Seriously moist, super decadent, these cupcakes maintain the perfect balance of savory and sweet all in a little bundle of dreamy red and white deliciousness. The mounds of decadent cream cheese frosting that adorn the burgundy red cake are so thick and mountainous that they resemble the Swiss Alps; just one bite will have you begging for mercy. This version of Red Velvet cake is so good, it has been known to turn a boisterous room of half drunken party-goers silent in less than 10 seconds flat. If you can't make it all the way up to Carnegie Hill, have no fear, if you are lucky sometimes you can score them at Dean & Deluca locations throughout the city. But if you do make the trek up to Carnegie Hill, be sure that you bring a couple home with you or you will have to go back again and again and again. And if you need refreshment before heading home, you can always head next store to the German themed bar for a frothy stein (lederhosen-clad waiters not included).
The most renowned bakery for Red Velvet around these parts, this place is the real deal. But then again, this should come as no surprise since the owner and baker at this shop, dubbed ?Cake Man Raven?, has been baking since he was a kid and learned from his grandmother in South Carolina (Raven beat Bobby Flay on "Throwdown with Bobby Flay"). The icing is not too sweet and has a delicate flavor balance of buttercream and cream cheese while the red cake is light and fluffy. The cake comes two ways; with or without walnuts. It is worth the trip to brooklyn for one of these babies, but don't go to late or you will be out of luck; they sell out fast!
Not only delicious, these cupcakes are also perfect looking. The frosting is impossibly smooth, light on the tongue, not too sweet and there is a good balance of cake to go along with it. Opened in Chelsea in 2003 and with a brand new shop just opened in Tribeca, these cupcakes are so good and so pretty, even fashionistas eat them; now that is saying a lot.
Graduates of the Magnolia camp, these students have become the teacher Mr. Miyagi! So serious about making Red Velvet cupcakes that they actually have two versions; the ?Sexy Red Velvet? is a traditional red velvet cupcake with a satiny buttercream frosting and the ?Sassy Red Velvet? is a red velvet cupcake with chocolate almond buttercream. If you can't decide which one you want, why not try both? You can't go wrong.
The bakery that brought the cupcake revolution about (thanks to a cameo on a little-known show about four single girls in New York) cooks up some dynamite red-velvet cupcakes. The cake is bright red, moist and always super fresh! If you aren't a big fan of the traditional cream-cheese frosting, you are in luck; Magnolia opts to top these babies off with their signature sugary vanilla frosting. With several locations around the city you can score one of these without having to travel far.
Moist, sweet, served with cream cheese frosting, these delicious cupcakes will fill your craving and with Eastside and Westside locations you can't beat this snack-time treat.
Although this is not a traditional 'sweets? bakery, Amy's bread serves up some serious competition when it comes to their red velvet cup cakes. Their modern version of an old southern recipe mixes the prefect amount of cocoa, sugar, red coloring and butter with a kick. Topped with an ample heap of buttercream frosting makes these puppies sell out quickly.
