You could hit Bloomingdale's or Macy's in practically any city, but this world-renowned department store only has one location, and it's a must-shop. Peruse the racks of high-end designer clothes, shoes, accessories and more for men, women, baby and home. Then refuel at the seventh floor restaurant, BG, before heading back out into the wild.
For those in search of intellectual rather than haute couture, look no further than this East Village bookstore. You'll find a mind-blowing selection of new, used, rare and out-of-print books. Or, if you're over the whole reading craze, sell your used books back to the store and make a few bucks.
For shoppers on a budget, this superstore in Lower Manhattan offers steeply discounted designer threads, accessories, cosmetics and more. Just be prepared for the crowds and awkward communal dressing rooms, and don't go in search of anything too specific, since you never know what you'll find.
We've all been there: It's 3am, and you absolutely MUST have an iPhone 4S immediately. No problem. Head to the Apple Store at 5th Avenue, open 24 hours (including the Genius Bar!), and get your techno-fix without waiting 'til morning.
If you know a kid--any kid--then you have a perfectly reasonable excuse to waste an afternoon at the most famous toy store in the world. And even if you don't know any kids, you can still re-enact the piano scene from "Big" while pretending to shop for your imaginary niece.
