My Favorite Restaurant

  1. 1 4 Star Rating: Recommended Cafe Gitane
    Read Reviews

242 Mott St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

This is my go-to spot. It's well worth the trek across Broadway to Nolita, even if there's a bit of a wait. Everything on the menu's delicious and reasonably priced, but I tend to order the same thing: seven grain avocado toast and the chicken satay.

My Favorite Bar

  1. 2 3.5 Star Rating: Average Winebar
    Read Reviews

65 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003 (map)

Cozy, communal tables in sultry environs are perfect for a pre-dinner drink on the Lower East Side. The extensive menu divided by country offers some reasonably priced bottles in addition to the too-expensive types. I typically go for a Spanish red, in addition to a flatbread.

144 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

This wine and beer bar is a block and a half from my apartment, making its biggest draw to me obvious: convenience. To boot, the ambience is pleasantly hipster chic without feeling contrived. The only downside is that it's cash-only.

My Favorite Special Occasion Place

  1. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Gramercy Tavern
    Read Reviews

    42 E 20th St, New York, NY 10003 (map)

To be clear, "special occasion" to me denotes that someone else is footing the bill. Even with the prix fixe menu, this classic new American is pricey, but the food warrants the cost. The ambiance is sophisticated, though unpretentious, and the outstandingly attentive staff makes me feel sufficiently special.

My Favorite Grocery Store

  1. 5 Whole Foods Market

95 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002 (map)

I haven't had a working oven or stove since the day Con Edison told me that I wasn't using any gas and suggested turning it off. As you might expect, my trips to the grocery store are infrequent. But when I do go, I go here.

My Favorite Takout

  1. 6 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Cube 63
    Read Reviews

63 Clinton St, New York, NY 10002 (map)

I love the sushi at this understated spot, and because it's BYOB, dining here isn't too much of a burden on the wallet. However, since it can be loud and cramped inside, I prefer it for takeout. The volcano roll is an absolute must, as is the standard spicy tuna roll.

My Favorite Clothing Shop

  1. 7 1 Star Rating: Poor Jill Stuart
    Read Reviews

100 Greene St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

While the regular prices are tough to stomach, the store holds periodic sales that make shopping here possible--without shedding tears for fear of your plummeting credit rating. I love it because I always find something among the racks of adorable clothes, and everything's of exceptional quality.

My Favorite Home Goods Shop

  1. 8 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Crate & Barrel
    Read Reviews

611 Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (map)

Since my apartment is roughly the size of the panic room in that mediocre film starring Jodie Foster entitled "Panic Room," I don't have much use for home furnishings. However, if I were to shop for such things, this would be the place. I like the stuff on display, and it's near my home.

My Favorite Salon

  1. 9 3.5 Star Rating: Average Aveda Esthetique
    Read Reviews

456 W Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (map)

I love Melissa, my stylist here. I've been going to her for years, and while she does my hair we have riveting talks about important things--like boyfriends, bars and food.

My Favorite Spa

  1. 10 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended La Casa Day Spa
    Read Reviews

    41 E 20th St, New York, NY 10003 (map)

The people who run this spa are genuinely committed to the alternative healing techniques they advocate. The space is tranquil so you can relax before getting colon hydrotherapy or immersing yourself in a bath with 800 pounds of Epsom salt for an hour of flotation.

My Favorite Hotel

  1. 11 3.5 Star Rating: Average A60
    Read Reviews

60 Thompson St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

Part of this swanky hotel's allure is its proximity to my house. But, more than that, there's a great Thai restaurant, Kitichai, and a lounge, Thom Bar, in its lobby, as well as an amazing rooftop bar called A60.

A Tourist Spot I Actually Like to Visit

  1. 12 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Central Park
    Read Reviews

5th Ave to Central Park W and 59th St to 110th St, New York, NY 10024 (map)

As much as I love this city, there's not much greenery. Rather than head to the dreaded suburbs to get my tree fix, I head to the park. There I can rollerblade or run around the reservoir and tease my olfactory glands with the fresh smell of trees, at least for a bit.

There's really nothing better than having a convenient store right down the block that's open 24 hours a day. This place has served me well: In the early morning for a cup of joe, late at night for a bottle of NyQuil. And whenever I've wanted to introduce some signs of life to my no-natural-light apartment, the desire is met by a spontaneous bouquet of flowers purchased here.
