Bathing Beauties

  1. 1 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Barneys New York
    Read Reviews

660 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10021 (map)

Come summer, this high-end New York department store sells men's and women's swimsuits that are, well, high-end. The men's swim department is particularly strong, and with a selection ranging from more casual designers (like Parke & Ronen and Juicy Couture) to the more upscale Prada and Roda, the fashionable set knows Barneys stocks some of the best swimwear around.

  2. 2 3 Star Rating: Average Canyon Beachwear
    Read Reviews

1136 3RD Ave, New York, NY 10065 (map)

The New York outposts (there's one on both the Upper East and Upper West sides) of this West Coast shop have an enormous selection of mid-range designer swimwear for women. The large stock makes it a great place for picky shoppers--especially women who fit into standard sizes, as only half the store is separates. The salespeople here have mastered the difficult task of being attentive without being annoying, and that makes the ever-daunting charge of finding a swimsuit almost enjoyable.

  3. 3 Gap

    17 W 34TH St, New York, NY 10001 (map)

Gap has surprisingly impressive lines of swimwear for everyone in the family. The options include mix and match separates for women, nicely fitted modern cuts for men and playful pieces for kids. The styles, colors and prints are fashionable and run the gamut from cool and classic to funky and fun. Better yet, the quality is high but the prices aren't.

  4. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended H&M
    Read Reviews

640 5th Ave, New York, NY 10019 (map)

H&M, the mecca of trendy, inexpensive clothing, also sells swimwear for men, women and children. The suits are designed for the store's young clientele, which means the men's trunks are mainly board shorts and the women's suits are primarily skimpy two-pieces. These suits won't last a lifetime, but at these prices they're perfect for seasonal of-the-moment fashions.

  5. 5 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Lord & Taylor
    Read Reviews

424 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10018 (map)

Lord and Taylor is the least showy of Manhattan's department stores, and this mentality extends to their men's and women's swimwear departments, which stock mature, classic styles. Though the ladies’ selection does have the seemingly requisite skimpy bikinis, the selection of one-pieces and cover-ups are above par. Likewise, both older and younger men will find quality suits.

  6. 6 4 Star Rating: Recommended Saks Fifth Avenue
    Read Reviews

    12 E 49TH St, New York, NY 10017 (map)

This polished department store sells swimwear for men, women and children. Though it's not the cheapest store, Saks carries suits in a variety of price-ranges (though the majority are relatively expensive) and has options for shoppers of all ages. The selection increases greatly in the summer as well as briefly during the winter, which is when Saks's chi-chi clientele needs "resort wear."

  7. 7 3.5 Star Rating: Average Urban Outfitters
    Read Reviews

526 Ave Of The Americas, New York, NY 10011 (map)

With its hip clothing and moderate prices, Urban Outfitters has long been the go-to place for shoppers who want to dress like they're with the band--an indie rock band, of course--and the store's men’s and women’s swimsuits don't disappoint. UO carries an array of trendy styles from lines like Cheap Monday, Kimchi Blue and ByCorpus, so if you're in the market for a fun and fashionable swimsuit, look no further.

  8. 8 Vilebrequin
    Write a review

436 W Broadway, New York, NY 10012 (map)

What Barbour is to men's coats, Vilebrequin is to men's swimwear. These carefully designed swim trunks, made from quick-dry spinnaker canvas (the lightweight material used for sailboat's downwind racing sails), are staples among upper-crust men and boys. The fun prints and bright colors make this brand instantly recognizable; everything from flowers to seahorses, checks to stripes are offered in dozens upon dozens of vibrant color palettes.

  9. 9 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Pesca Boutique Ltd
    Read Reviews

    244 E 60th St, New York, NY 10022 (map)

This tiny Upper East Side swimwear and lingerie shop is packed to the brim with sultry swimsuits from mostly European designers. This isn't the shop for the body-conscious, but women who are comfortable flaunting their bodies will love Pesca's selection of unique bikinis, one-pieces and even thongs.

  10. 10 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Azaleas
    Read Reviews

    223 E 10th St, New York, NY 10003 (map)

This small East Village boutique sells lingerie, but it also has a great selection of women's swimwear. The staff is helpful without being in-your-face, and the store's collection of fun and flirty tankinis, bikinis and one-pieces keeps the shop's lingerie-vibe in mind. Between the range of options and the staff's assistance, you're almost sure to find a swimsuit you not only like but that also fits you right.

  11. 11 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Malia Mills Swimwear
    Read Reviews

199 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10012 (map)

A New York institution, this high-end Nolita boutique sells its own line of women's swimwear. First the staff helps you find a flattering cut; only then do color and print come into play. These suits won't ride up, fall down or unravel, and don't worry if you're not pin-thin, as Malia Mills makes suits for real women. But swimwear and service of this caliber come at a price: expect to drop a few hundred dollars, at least.

  12. 12 American Apparel
    Write a review

181 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002 (map)

This ubiquitous brand sells simple, reasonably-priced swimwear for both men and women. The men's selection consists of a few styles in an array of colors, while the women's selection offers a wide range of mix-and-match separates, making a flattering suit easy to find. Just don't get too upset if you don't look as good as the hipster-models used in American Apparel's infamous ad campaigns.
