The Scene
Built in 1989 on the border of Greenwich Village and Soho, the Angelika caters to both neighborhoods so well that the theater often sells out its shows. With more mainstream flicks on its screens--and more independent films popping up at the chains--the Angelika isn't as alternative as it used to be. That may be attributable to the fact that it is no longer independently owned; now City Cinemas is responsible for programming.

The Draw
Hanging out at the overpriced lobby cafe for auteuristic arguments requires no ticket purchase. Just be forewarned before you go downstairs: The theaters are tiny, the sightlines poor, and the audio interrupted by subway rumblings. Nevertheless, the Angelika still gets its share of exclusive bookings, and the special midnight screenings are well chosen.

Once in a while my wife and I go here because of their film selection. We have found that the best way to go here without complete aggrevation is to buy tix on fandango and pick them up in the lobby. Of course today we didn't do that and we waited on the line and when we finally, after 10 minutes, reached the window the moron ticket clerk unapologetically informed us that our movie is sold out. Couldn't she have made an announcement so we didn't waste our time? Or how about the morons counting money next to her put a sign up that says sold out!?! If you go here you will see there is no manager because the place isn't friendly or competent.

Dirty and badly maintained. The theater was very dark and the bare metal on the seat ripped my pants from waist to mid thigh and left a nasty scratch. Manager's response was that she couldn't do anything. After begging for help to cover myself, she finally agreed to my plea for a stapler. She didn't send anyone to check the seat to prevent someone else's injury.
