Editorial Review for Anthology Film Archives – by Stephen Garrett

The Scene
For decades, the Jonas Mekas-founded Anthology Films Archive was a dumpy former courthouse building that screened 16mm prints from an extensive collection of serious art films. Today, it's a thriving, dynamic popular space and social scene, with well-equipped screening rooms and a small gallery, all still housed in a misleadingly grim institutional-looking facility.

The Draw
In the mid-1990s, a crew of youngish film aficionados breathed new life into Anthology, expanding its formerly academic offerings and upgrading the archive into one of the most active centers of current world cinema. The programming comprises an eclectic array, while the ongoing "Essential Cinema" series remains a must for the film scholar. Home to film festivals like The New York Underground Film Festival, among many others, the space has also hosted live musical performances, including Sonic Youth performing to the films of Stan Brakhage.

Thank goodness that someplace like Anthology exists -- and you know it took NYC to invent it. Offering a home for all kinds of programming, Anthology is more eclectic than Walter Reade or BAM Rose and more adventurous than anywhere else you're likely to find out there. Looking at this upcoming blockbuster season, I anticipate a lot of summer trips to Second Avenue.
