good local thrash music. actually i have seen a lot of music here of all types--mostly local stuff. this bar has a great location....is actually pretty safe and usually the cover isn't much at all

An underground rock room for live acts, with just enough grease to match the hipster horde.. In Short
East Village music fans are lured by up to six performers a night, from rock fixtures to funk newcomers, in a space considered more polished than neighboring Continental. Headbangers enter the low-lit, sublevel room through a foyer, which also serves as a retreat from the top-of-the-line sound system and intimate, standing-room-mostly space. A few benches and chairs line the walls, and more arrive when comedians and theater productions take the stage.

Small, rocking venue for local bands building a following.. The Scene
Tucked beneath Acme Bar & Grill, this music club matches its parent's Cajun cooking and soul with indie rock and roll. It lines up a full roster of artists each night, leaning toward an alternative vibe, but also dipping into harder sounds and electronic streaks. The room is humble: black cushioned seating against the walls, a corner bar that serves somewhat overpriced, small but strong drinks (no tap beers), and two big, booming speakers in front of the easy-to-view stage.

The Draw
Any given evening offers a mixed bag, with a fair share of nice surprises as well as the occasional appearance of more established bands. The eclectic crowd of friends and fans, in an array of scruffy, edgy and conventional styles, whip up an enthusiastic and congenial mood, as well as some low-key scoping to keep things interesting.

Great Underground. Acme Underground is a rockin' place to hang out and watch cool bands. It has a very intimate feel and smoky resonance.

UGH. This place is terrible. If you are a band, they will probably tell you you are going on an hour early so your friends will have to drink more, and they would rather die than pay you. I've had them weasel out several times and be verbally abusive to me and my band mates. No good bands EVER play there because no band would ever play there more than twice, they treat everyone like crap and like they are doing you a favor by letting you play there. They don't treat you like you are going to come back again and try to establish a relationship, they treat you like they are going to screw you out of your money, sell some booze, and never see you again. That's why the bands there suck so often and the crowd they attract is a bunch of idiots.

SOMEONE MUST BE READIONG THIS. Someone must be reading this because i saw a label showcase there tonight for CMJ and the sound was excellent, and it looked much better too.

I'd rather poke my eyes out. I agree with the earlier review, sometimes you just get stuck going to Acme underground to see your friend's band. Luckily, you can eat and get pretty loaded upstairs at the restaurant to numb the pain brought on by the terrible sound, worse vibe and boring bartenders.

BAND GET SIGNED OUT OF THERE. Actually, my band does play there, and a couple of my friends bands have been signed out of there. It doesn't take a huge crowd to fill the room, and the booking agent there is the only one in NYC who would give me the time of day. As far as furthering a bands career I think this venue is a must. Not to mention it's the last of it's kind in New York City.

only if you've gotta.... Sometimes, you just gotta go to Acme Underground. Mostly, that's because your best friend's band is playing there, or if you're really unlucky, because your OWN band is playing there. The sound is subpar and the bands are forced to load in their gear in the hallway, but at least the drinks are relatively cheap. Buy some, you'll need 'em.
