Editorial Review for Zanzibar – by Riva Froymovich
In Short
Inspirations are worldly in this midtown space. One lounge resembles a European ski lodge with a circular open-pit fireplace; another flaunts animal-print upholstery. But the front bar is all city, with a sidewalk view of busy 9th Avenue, elevated DJ booth and extended acrylic bar, serving mango mojitos and fruity vodka drinks infused on-site. The menu combines different cultures, like its namesake island. Middle Eastern pies, chorizos al vino and chicken fettuccine round out the offerings.

Had my 30th bday party here last week and my friends and I had a blast! The staff was so easy to work with in setting everything up. We ordered (way too much) food ahead of time and went with a bar tab. The food was great, and the drinks flowed freely without breaking the bank. I'm still not sure how none of us had been here before. Our waitress Maria was a sweetie and always available. We were in the fireplace room and the half we had was perfect for our group of 25. The DJ played fun music but was not intrusive, so you could have a conversation and still feel like you're at a party. The one snag: a friend was given a hard time at the door for wearing a tshirt, but when I went out to let them know he was with the party they let him in without issue (or greasing). Overall a fabulous place for a party- I will definitely have events here again in the future.
Pros: Everything

I've passed Zanzibar everyday for a year without going in - but I'm glad to say I've finally succombed the compfy sofas and chilled out music nights. Seriously, the most friendly relaxed staff you will find and generally an all round non city type pub in town. Top marks.
