UWS movie house. obviously the biggest theater on the UWS - Lincoln Center is pretty good - especially matinees. just dont hit it at 7:30 on a Fri or Sat night---

Great Theater!. I used to go there all the time when I was on the Upper West Side. Fantastic for big-screen Hollywood fare, with the occasional smaller film showing. Great layout as far as theaters go, extremely spacious. More upscale crowd than the Times Square theaters. If you're looking for dinner or afterwards or a good book, nearby Ollie's and Barnes & Noble provide other great local options.

It may be one of Manhattan's most popular theaters, but even its great location and selection can't overcome the filthiness and bad seats.. The Scene
Eleven large screens and a huge IMAX arena recommend this giant entertainment standby, in which the various theaters are named after--and designed to look like--old-fashioned picture palaces. If not exactly comfortable (there's no stadium seating, except in the IMAX theater), it's so centrally situated that everyone ends up here. As an added draw, one of the bigger theaters features an impressive balcony.

The Draw
While its busy 68th Street location makes this bustling theater easy to reach, it also results in claustrophobia-inducing overcrowding. Give yourself plenty of time to get your tickets--or better yet, buy them in advance. During daytime hours, expect lots of kids and school groups lured by the IMAX screen. Since the theater shows both big-budget and indie fare (the screens hidden away downstairs also play occasional host to local film festivals), the clientele is a healthy cross-section of city-dwellers.

fab movie theatre. This theatre is a great place to see both the top films and the occasional indy film. Relatively free of tourist types, the theatre still gets very busy at night. If going on the weekend, be sure to buy your tickets in advance. The IMAX theatre is a lot of fun, but beyond that one of their several screens is massive. If you can catch a movie in that theatre you have your choice of main or balcony seating!!

Losing Ground. I agree with other users that this used to be one of my favorite theaters, but the long lines and perpetually sold out shows takes this theater down several notches. The theater at Union Square is just as good, plus stadium seating and shorter lines. This theater is totally not worth it, but if you decide to go, double check the movie times because the theater time does not always match the times listed in the paper.

Ever heard of buying tickets online??. This is a clean theater in a great neighborhood, and the crowds actually shut up and watch the movies when they start. I love it!

As for that review which complained about the long line...yes, you do have to arrive early since this is a great theater, in a movie-going neighborhood. But really, buy your tickets online and just go pick them up at the kiosk. Can't get any simpler than that! If you arrive at most theaters 5 minutes before the movie starts you are going to get a bad seat, if any--this one is no exception.

Eh.. It's clean, comfortable, and attractively decorated. My big problem with this place? They only have ONE long line for all movies. Even if your movie is starting in 5 minutes, you have to wait behind 50 people buying tickets for shows in 2 hours. So for any show, you have to arrive ridiculously early. And it's not worth the wait.

7. This is still one of the best places in NYC. However, I do believe that it is starting to lag behind United Artists in Union Square.

Needs a facelift. This used to be my favorite theater in Manhattan, until I discovered stadium seating at UA Union Square and the sublime environs and selection of the Sunshine. I still like the over-the-top decor, but the theaters are substandard now, compared to its competitors, seating- and sound-wise. And in such a busy neighborhood, all shows are almost always sold out.
