New York's Premier venue for Live Music

  • Full Cocktail and dinner Menu
  • Live Music every night
  • Dance Lessons available

25 years ago, something began to bubble on Varick Street in lower Manhattan. Fueled by a total commitment to exposing the musical wealth and heritage of the Afro-Latino Diaspora to as many people as possible, Larry Gold opened the doors to what would become New York City's premier venue for world music; Sounds Of Brazil, commonly known as S.O.B.'S. The venue and the neighborhood remain an important and vital part of the cultural fabric of New York, drawing both locals and tourists from around the world. Beyond the music, S.O.B.'S is known for serving some of the finest cuisine in the area with a menu that features Latin and Brazilian specialties in a relaxed, friendly and fun atmosphere. Treat yourself to a tropical getaway right in the heart of SoHo! Come in check your troubles at the door and enjoy dinner, an exotic cocktail and a great show.

Editorial Review for S.O.B.'s – by Michael Kramer

The Background
The name stands for "Sounds of Brazil," but this nicely sized room, decorated in full bamboo tropical regalia, showcases everything from Trinidadian calypso and Jamaican reggae to Cuban salsa, samba and the latest in Afro-pop. It also pulls in big-name performers, old-school and new, like bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto, R&B smasher Angie Stone, street poet Gil Scott Heron and the hip-hopping Beatnuts.

The Experience
The kitchen offers decent fare and the drinks are appropriately fruity and exotic, encompassing mojitos and margaritas, as well as tiki-like selections. S.O.B.'s attracts an interesting mix: Prepare to sway and swing among hip locals, international jet-setters, and of course, tourists.

I paid $20 cover thinking there was going to be a samba band. The group that was playing weren't playing samba. They covered "No Woman No Cry". This was there last song this night. The dj (he was part of the band) played a song that abruptly stopped in the beginning and then he played "No Woman No Cry". Pretty annoying. I asked for a glass of water and the bartender said no, that I would have to buy a bottle of water. Next thing, a "dj" and a "percussionist" play some music that shuts off surprisingly every 5 minutes. The "dj" would open her mouth wide and look sideways: "what happened?!" She kept on playing the same track over and over and over again. There were big chunks of broken glass on the dance floor and nobody was picking it up for a long time. Don't go to this place if you don't know exactly who's playing. I want my money back!

I had my 40th birthday party at SOB's last weekend and it was amazing. The food and service was excellent. The featured band "Alo Brazil" was exceptional. It was the first time my guests attended SOB's and they loved it. If you're going to have a group of 10 or more definitely contact the Special Events Manager, Lourdes Perez. She was very helpful and gave me a good price. Overall, it was a very memorable event. I highly recommend it.

Pros: music

Cons: small space
