The Scene
With the loss of booker and indie-rock impressario Tod Abramson in 1996, the club sagged a bit in presenting local and touring indie-rock bands before they hit big. After a period of different ownership, mediocre bands and microbrews, Abramson returned to helm the club alongside Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and musician Dave Post.
The Draw
The little wooden room and small stage still provide a surprisingly good venue for excellent rock music, and the sound system fulfills its duty, but the club has moved with Hoboken in general toward a more mainstream ambience. But there's still good beer, warm atmosphere, decent pub grub and enough intriguing sounds to make Maxwell's worth a bus or PATH ride cross the Hudson.

This place has it all, awesome music, great food and an atmosphere that makes you want to return again and again. Try the burgers or their spectacular quesadilla's, everything on the menu is delicious. Also with knowledgeable bartenders who are friendly and love to serve. The sound system makes it sound like an arena hundreds of times bigger, abut with the small stage it is easy to interact with the artists. It is one of the best venues I have ever been to, and I know I will be returning as often as possible.

Very hip nightclub with great live music. Wonderful place to hang with your friends to have a drink and grab a bite to eat -- try their nacho plater, quesadillas, sandwiches, burgers or pot pie. For all you guys -- they have a great tap bar selection.

This legendary bar and music venue is still going strong. The same bands that end up selling out larger and trendier venues in the city (Bowery Ballroom, NorthSix, Brownies, etc.) invariably end up playing here either just before or after their gig in the city. The difference is, you'll often be able to get in to see them here. The Hoboken address still freaks out enough city-dwellers to give people willing to make a 5-minute PATH trip and a 10-12 minute walk a chance of seeing great bands in a tiny little space. The front bar and restaurant are always good for hanging out in before a show. And the back room were bands perform is a great space for live music. It's just a tiny black box, but the sound is good and the intimacy often inspires a huge amount of energy tin the performers and the crowd.
