RENT (NY) Editorial Review

Overview
Jonathan Larsen's opus marked musical theater's first significant attempt to consider the devastating impact of AIDS, gentrification, homophobia and drug addiction. Centering on an aspiring filmmaker and an HIV-positive songwriter, the convoluted plot traces their attempts to find fame, fortune and love--without selling out. A tall order, but an energetic light rock score, clever lyrics and some scene-stealing supporting roles ensure that their travails continue to pull in a generation of bohos eager to see themselves on an Equity stage.

The Experience
A veritable revolving door for struggling actors, "Rent" retains its rag-tag vigor, but its courage in handling gritty, daring themes and its music are already becoming dated--not because AIDS, homophobia and rent inflation aren't still issues, but because their manifestations have changed.
