Great place horrible service..
I was reading Man078's review for this place and have to say the same thing happened to me. We were seated by the waiter at a seat, I had about an hour to kill before i was picked up by my friend. I met one of my friends outside and we went in there to catch up.We ordered our drinks and the dinner while we were waiting and chatting the manager (or someone who looked like one) came and told us that its a regular's table and we had to finish up faster. he didn't offer us another seat or anything. I was too tired from a 6 hr greyhound bus trip didn't wanted to pick a fight. I just told him that may be he should get the money for the food I ordered from the regular too and walked out of there.
My friend (an NYC local) was so embarrassed at the treatment handled out at us.Good to see that they are on top of customer pleasing aspect of business.
Rude! Obnoxious and UnFriendly!.
Went to grab some drinks with a friend last night and We've never been so insulted in our lives!!! The nice waitress sat us down at a table around 6:45, all the way in the corner. It wasn't that great, but we weren't complaining. She was friendly and we ordered our drinks and started chit chatting. The RUDE so called Manager shows up at quarter past 7 and has the audacity to tell us with an attitude "YOU know this table is reserved for 7:30, right?" My friend and I looked at each other... we didn't see any sign on the table and the waitress didn't tell us it was reserved either.
We were fuming... how dare he? is that supposed to mean we gotta leave now? He could've been nice about it and we would have no problem! the waitress apologized to us over and over again on behalf of the Manager. We had just ordered our second round of drinks and we sent that back. Told the waitress to bring us the check. On our way out my friend let him have it, and I told him about this review - he went Nice all of the sudden, .. we can work something out.. etc.. etc.. I told him buddy you should've thought of that before you were rude!
Don't go there.. there are so many other places that offer so much more! Take Bar 6 off your list, its not worth it!!!
Always a pleasure. I've been coming to Bar Six for about 6 years now and have not once, had an unpleasant experience. I went to the New School just down the block, and would frequent Bar Six because they offer a 15% discount and as a student, the only thing better than free is discounted. Bar Six is a comfortable, quaint and friendly place. Sure the staff changes every so often and maybe you got one of the ones that didn't last and caused you to have an unpleasant experience but I urge you to give it another try. For me it's always been a haven between classes to stop in and have a BLT (delicious) and a draft beer which changes seasonally. It's a great place to come alone or with a group. There is seating for parties of all sizes and a dinning room if you want to sit and eat or a bar and cocktail section is you just want a drink or a quick bite. The menu is great-a mix of french bistro and morroccan style cuisines and BLT's! Oh, and you must try a dessert, they are consistently wonderful. All in all, my review is positive for Bar Six, even when I go there now, the manager still remembers me and knows where I like to sit and I always feel very welcome. I always recommend this place to friends and I always will, so on my recommendation, give it a try!
Stop hating on the Six!!!!. First off let me just say that I have been a regular at bar six for almost 12 years. I have seen it slowly change over the years but for the most part it has been very good to me. I'm shocked that anyone would torpedo a place that has as many regulars as the six. This place has been consistently busy for the better part of a decade and I still see a lot of the familiar faces every time I come in. Granted some of my favorite bartenders have moved on in their careers but I am willing to give their replacements at least a chance before I bash the service. I usually am not one for writing reviews but I just felt that I had to take a stance against such negative sentiment for one of my true favorite neighborhood spots. The food has always been consistent and reasonably priced. The calamari with spicy harissa is a favorite and the moutabelle platter is always a good starter with a nice glass of wine. The burgers are juicy and the french fries are out of this world. As far as the service is concerned it is more casual than say Pastis but I've never found anyone to be rude or snobbish like many of the trendier spots. I never feel pressured to leave or rush through my meal no matter how busy it is and any special requests I may have are often granted without hesitation. I admit that I am no authority when it comes to restaurant quality but I have to say that there are only a handful of places in the city that have done it as well for as long as bar six!
Place in denial of its decline. Departure of gracious and charming staff over the years has led to a slow descent at this place. Tired, new staff who are clueless, and food that is sometimes downright risky for your stomach, the meats are iffy here. Used to be cool, and low-key with just the right mix of edge and neighborliness, but now, its just a bland slate.
What happened?. I used to live in Greenwich Village and I loved going to Bar 6, especially for the chicken tagine. It was yummy and warm and filled with spices that transported me, even if momentarily, to another country far away. Finding myself in the old neighborhood and hungry I thought I would drop in to the old haunt. What a let down, what a disappointment, what a waste of money! The service was completely lax, words cannot describe how bland and tasteless the chicken tagine was. After I was half way through the dish though I was still hungry I could no longer try to pretend this was anything but inedible and I pushed the dish aside. The waiter finally noticed ,after hanging around the register and talking with his co-workers , and he asked me what was wrong. I very politely told him that though I understand he did not personally cook the dish but it was bland and tasteless. Now if a restaurant values it's customers in this economy they would take action with a dissatisfied customer and offer them something else. Like another entree or a comped dessert. Not at Bar 6. I will never go back there and I will absolutely dissuade anyone who asks from doing so.
A Great Discovery. After Shopping in the neighborhood, we were headed elsewhere for a quick bite, when my wife mentioned that she'd passed Bar 6 many times and it always looked busy. We glanced at the menu and went in. We saw the style to be French Bistro and planned on burgers and beer or maybe steak frites. Service was friendly, capaable and just the right amount of attention. Was excited to see the Moroccan Dishes and ordered Bisteeya. It was outrageously great! Wife had the Hanger Steak Frites and loved it. While the wine list is brief and pricey, they offer bottles @$28.00 of the same that they serve by the glass, 4 reds and 4 whites. Very reasonable and we enjoyed the bottle of Shiraz immensely. We arrived 8ish and they had empty tables but were busy with plenty of diners, and by 9:30 when we were leaving they were buzzing and had no more empty tables! We enjoyed the atmosphere and the cool vibe of the music. BTW the bathrooms were fine and probably nicer than some fancy restaurants I've been to! Go, linger, love and eat well.
AWFUL busboy!. Went there for a sunday brunch. We were a party of six and there was some confusion with the order so it all arrived at different times. The busboy placed the food down in front of the wrong people and started giving attitude when we asked what is what. I've worked in the service industry for years but i've NEVER come across anyone treat us so rudely. He then went over to the manager and gestured rudely at us and every time he walked biy would glare at us. they need to get RID OF HIM! our server was nice and the hostess helped us sort out the situation, but he brought down the whole experince from which would of been an enjoyable lunch to never go back there!
Amazing any night of the week.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for either a romantic dining spot for a date or just a relaxed bar for a night out with friends. The food is great, the staff is friendly and attentive, and they make some of the best drinks in Manhattan. (Gin and tonic lovers, try the French75. It's amazing.) The artichoke is to die for, as are the frites, and the frisee salad is pure French bistrot. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have never once been disappointed. (The same goes for the cocktail list.)
Everything is reasonably priced (even more so for New School students, who get 15% off with a valid student ID). I'm saying reasonably priced by Boston standards; in Manhattan, this place is a steal. The atmosphere is great, not too loud (except around midnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, but find me a bar that isn't), the music ranging from edgy to timeless. During the spring and summer, they open up the floor-to-ceiling windows on Sixth Avenue and have an al fresco patio. When the weather really starts heating up, there's nothing more refreshing than a Bar Six mint julip on the patio. Any breeze there is cuts right through the windows and cools down the bar tables as well.
One thing to keep in mind:Be smart about when you go. If you show up at 9:00 on a Friday night and the place is packed, expect service to be slower in the dining room; they only have a few servers on at a time, so when it's slammed, everyone is slammed. In cases like that, I'd recommend just eating at a bar table. They offer the full menu there and your service may be more prompt than it would be in the dining room at a peak time.
Word of advice: Their bar is fantastic, but it doesn't stay open until four. If you want to be there for more than an hour, I'd get there by 12:30. It's great as a first stop for your night out; you can get some drinks and a bite to eat and enjoy the relaxing ambience before stepping into the frenzy of the NYC nightlife madness.
Most consistent in City!. This place is always great. Cool vibe, Great food and hot shaved head manager! I have been going for 8 years and always find high quality all around. Also a good place to dine alone.
