Terrific Authentic Japanese.
I have eaten in a lot of real Japanese and "american japanese" restaurants. If you want traditional, fresh, good quality sashimi, sushi, ininwa udon, this is an excellent place to go.
It is always quiet, good service, and delicious taste
New York diners take a trip to Japan--without leaving midtown..
The Scene
On the basement level of the Kitano Hotel, guests get a taste of Japanese culture. Hostesses draped in kimonos smile and bow as they lead guests to the main dining area or one of three private tatami rooms. Unflattering fluorescent lighting and less-than-luxurious furnishings make the space feel more fast food than fine cuisine, but the look is deceiving.
The Food
An a la carte menu offers specialties like Kobe beef cooked on a hot rock, but the Kaiseki, a traditional multicourse tasting dinner served on gorgeous pottery and porcelain, promises dining adventure. Choose tempura, steak, or impeccably fresh sushi as a main course, and let the chef select the rest. A dainty dish cradles creamy house-made tofu, a tiny hand-painted pot reveals a delicate egg custard, and a wicker stand displays a bowl of shaved ice topped with silky sashimi. Mango ice cream or coffee-flavored gelatin finishes the flavorful journey.
Not impressed :(. For the price we paid for dinner.. $275 for a party of 2, we were hoping for some really good food. However, the sushi / sashimi wasn't very fresh and the pieces were tiny. The sesame tofu was alright but I wouldnt get the squid marinated in salt ever again. It was very very fishy.. The egg custard with veggie was good but there was fish in it.. I thought it was veggie not fish...hmm? The waitress was very nice even though her English was a little hard to understand. The flouresent lighting wasn't as bad as the other reviews claimed. I like the roomy seating arrangements and the decor was alright. All things aside, I don't mind paying top dollars for great food, mediocre service and decor but this place just doesn't cut it for me.
Please get rid of the fluorescent lights.
Why are there fluorescent lights in this restaurant?
I expect to see fluorescent lights in a college cafeteria, not in a $100 a person restaurant.
The food is very good, but those lights must go.
What were you thinking?
With some nice lighting, this restaurant could be romantic.
