Editorial Review for New York Public Library--Science, Industry and Business Library – by Julie Mehta
Overview
It's rare that a research library packs as much practical punch as this one. Since this $100 million facility opened its vault-like steel doors in 1996, the NYPL branch has introduced thousands of patrons to a treasury of comprehensive print and electronic resources. A sweeping wall of quotes referencing the library's area of focus, a two-story atrium and a wall of televisions broadcasting news and financial channels liven up the bi-level space filled with hundreds of computer workstations and manual-laden shelves.
Features
Whether you're researching your 401k funds, looking for a job or trying to start your own business, chances are this library can help. But with 1.2 million books, 110,000 periodical titles and more than 100 electronic databases, the sheer quantity of materials can be overwhelming. Fortunately the informational kiosks are easy-to-use and librarians are available for one-on-one consultations.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe library hosts free training classes on everything from searching the web to conducting patent searches. Laptop docking stations provide access to the Internet and most of the library's databases.
When to GoThe library has scaled back the number of workstations available for email and general Internet access. People line up in the mornings to schedule workstation time at the information kiosks.
Save TimePopular with busy New Yorkers, a telephone service allows patrons to request items from the library's closed stacks to be waiting for them upon arrival. The number is (212) 592-7018.

This may be the best NYPL branch to study and read in. The facilities are new and immaculate, and unlike the main branch on 5th Avenue it isn't crowded and noisy. Of course, the main branch is still the most beautiful library in the city--go there if you need things to look at while you procrastinate.
