What Our Expert Scouts Say

April 07, 2013

The original pan-Asian comfort food restaurant, all good times and giant portions, hasn't changed a bit and it's still far and away the best of the genre. Forget P.F. Chang's! This is the real (fake) deal.

Great Food if you like eating in an auditorium. Upon entering this establishment, I knew right away the atmostphere wasn't my style. I don't like large dining hall type places with a lot of noise. I like dining to be more of an intimate experience. The food was delicious, the lobster pancakes, duck fried rice and black bean cod. However, the prices were astronomical! The appie was $36.00 and most entrees were in the forties. Twenty bucks for a dessert? I don't care if they feed 4 people, it was only me. I think I should have stayed at Bond 45 for my meal instead of only the drinks!

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. If you like Asian food you can do so much better in all the wonderful authentic Chinese restaurants around the city, and you won't have to spend so much money. While the space is nice and attracts a crowd, this place is overpriced and the food and service are sloppy. Our dessert especially was a joke, it looked like a mess of a cake you could buy at any diner.

I've been to Asia de Cuba and really liked it, as China Grill is in the same restaurant group I expected better. Again, save your money and go elsewhere, not worth it!!

Asian-themed fun foodf or the power set.. Since its inception in the ‘80s, China Grill has been so wildly successful that it's easy to lose sight of what made it that way. Set in an enormous space on the ground floor of the CBS building on 6th Avenue, it’s always slammed with mid-level executives in tailored suits and, later on, the same men with attractive, well-coiffed female escorts. The food is loosely Pan-Asian, but really, this is food for Americans: tons of steak, chicken, lobster, ribs and other heavy proteins, generally fried or roasted and covered in sauces with just hints of Asian flavors. This isn't a spot for aficionados of Asian cuisine but it is for those in search of great service, big portions of hearty food and strong, well-made drinks.

Awesome food, Awesome service, and just good fun!!!. I rarely venture to midtown in hopes to find truly excellent meal, especially directly by Time Square, however China Grill has proven that they can provide great food and great service even in a touristy area. A few friends and I went to China Grill for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. This was our first time there, but it was recommended by a friend for large groups so we thought we'd try it out. Upon arriving, we were seated immediately with our table (9 people) already set. Right away we were greeted by our waiter with a big smile. We all ordered some cocktails off their list (pear margarita is EXCELLENT!!). After looking at the menu we all placed our orders. The food is meant to share so it just kinda came out as it was ready. That was different but a very cool idea. We passed all the plates around a ate like a big family. It was great. The restaurant was busy but you would have never noticed with the service that we got. We never had to wait long for anything and then when we ordered dessert, it came out with a big "Happy Birthday" written on the plate and a candle. It was adorable!!!! We all had a blast and my boyfriend absolutely loved his birthday dinner. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone, hands down one of the more impressive and memorable restaurant experiences I have had in a while. Thanks you China Grill!!!!!

Won't go back. Service was like they were trying to turn tables every 30 minutes. Starters came out before we had even had a sip of our cocktails and my wife's lobster (cooked to a mush) came to the table 10 minutes after my duck (way overdone). Took a few bites and left as soon as we could. This was our first and definitely LAST visit.

Fantastic Service!. Last night we held a company dinner here- it was fabulous, everyone had a wonderful time! The dinner coordinator, Ela, was completely on the ball with everything in regards to planning the dinner - she had great follow up and organization. The food was delicious, the portions very generous. The servers were incredibly attentive - the dinner ran exceptionally smooth with no hiccups.

Great food, poor service. I read the recent reviews of China Grill and I think the problem is that people do not know in advance what to expect. All main courses at China Grill, whether on the regular or restaurant week menu, are large portions meant for sharing. Thus, they are priced accordingly. A main dish can set you anywhere between $30 and $60, but when you consider that you receive enough food for two, this is not bad at all. My friends and I went to China Grill last night for the restaurant week. Unlike the previous reviewer, we found it to be a very good deal. For the two appetizers we choose, one main course, and two desserts, we would have paid $94 on a regular night. The restaurant week brought it down to $70. Unlike many other places, which during the restaurant week serve dishes normally not found on the regular menu, China Grill servers some of their most popular everyday items, including the sashimi tempura, calamari salad, spicy dumplings, and skirt steak. We actually ordered all of the above and found them well prepared and delicious. Apart from the food, which all people in our party immensely enjoyed, the service was below average. A couple of drinks we ordered never came and generally, it took much longer than usual for the food to arrive. The check had an item that we did not order or consume, but that was easily fixed. All in all, I recommend this place and look forward to my next visit.

I went to China Grill last night with a group of friends. We decided to order from the restaurant week menu,

Good food, but did not get the point of restaurant week. The idea of sharing plates seems not too uncommon at China Grill, so I would be OK with the idea. Also, the food was pretty good, we were not leaving hungry despite sharing a main course and dessert between two. However, ordering from the regular menu (assuming a same-sized main course) would probably have cost about the same - so the idea of restaurant week, being able to try fancy places at a reasonable price, does not really work here. Shame. Otherwise, place is rather noisy, staff was between friendly, courteous and entertaining (all in a positive sense). All in all, a good experience, but not quite worth the price tag.

DISAPPOINTING FOOD PORTIONS. I went here during restuarant week for lunch when you are suppose to get an appetizer, entree and desert for the price of $24.07. The restuarant was crowded and very full and decorative, once we were seated we were told that the we choose 2 appetizers, 1 entree , 1 desert and pay 24.07 each. So where other restuarants give you your own entree and desert china grill expected you to share your entire meal. This is trully not sticking with the idea of restaurant week, so why participate at all? The spicy beef dumpling was delisicious, and the entree was a skirt steak and lo mein. The entree was shared between two people and was suppose to be sharing portions, but they definately were not. The entree was a one person serving. When desert was presented it was once again a slice of cake that you were suppose to share. I must say that the entire meal was delicous, but five mintues after leaving the restuarant I was still hungary....sharing an entree is not ideal. The atmosphere was great, but I left feeling like I got scammed for restuarant week. I would not go back
