What People Are Saying About New Green Bo Restaurant

You won't blink twice at the restaurant's spartan decor: As the packed crowds and critics' praises wallpapering the front wall agree, this longtime local favorite is truly one of the area's most exquisite finds. New Green Bo's juicy pork or crab shau lon bau (soup dumplings) attracted much attention when they were first discovered by mainstream food critics several years ago. But other comfort foods are also superb: Chow fun with shredded pork and preserved cabbage (it's not on the menu) offers a tangy rice-noodles retake on the usual lo mein. Top off your meal with flaky, not-too-sweet red…

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory sits invitingly across the street, offering free samples of its tropical longyan, mango, red bean and lychee flavors, in both ice creams and sorbets.
The Extras:
New Green Bo also makes some of Chinatown's best pot stickers.
When To Go:
Try to hit it at an off hour if you don't want to share your table with six other people.
Know Before You Go:
Secret to a soup dumpling: poke the skin and let the soup spill into the spoon and cool before eating.
ambiance
75.0% positive
  1. Don't let the ambiance of this place fool you, the food is far better than many pricey establishments.
  2. understand the area and folks you need not come here for the romantic, alluring ambiance or the five star service featuring a sommlier and a complicated maze of captain and back waiters - you come for the authentic foods, the tastes, the experiance.
  3. The service was quick and the location was nice.
  4. Was reading other reviews and thought -- if all you order is chow fun then of course it's greasy and awful (and not even Shanghainese)
dessert

  3. love how they throw our cookies on a dirty plate with the check!
  4. The rice cakes aren't that flavorful, and I'm not a big fan of their shaw lou bao.

  10. An incredible meal.
  11. My friend who lives in the area went there and recommended their shanghai noodles.
  12. The soup dumplings are very good, not quite as big as some of the other places in the area, but still with a very smooth dumpling shell nonetheless.
  13. The food is great!
  14. Good tourist intro to Chinatown food.
  15. It's not even good basic Chinese food.
  16. Anyone thinking this is authentic Shanghai taste is sorely mistaken.
  17. must say I enjoyed their soup dumplings more than Joe's,but the other dishes were disappointing.
  18. The helpings are John Bunyan-sized and the food is so tasty.

Best damn dumplings period.

by CSMobileUser2

I love this place the food is the best ever!!! I have eating in some nice places, upscale places as well and not one can stand up to this one. Their fried pork dumpings are mouth watering; the peanut butter and scallion flavors awaken your taste buds right away. If you love great chinese at a reasonable price this is it. You may get a little discouraged from the decor which says nothing about the food; but trust me, you'll forget all about that. the fact that the batroom is way down stairs and its as big as a shoe box may make you want to have a bottle of sanitizer close buy. But over all this is my favorite place hands down, were going to pig out there this weekend forsure.

Alright.

I live in Chinatown, so I've tried most of the food there. It's a mediocre restaurant for me. The rice cakes aren't that flavorful, and I'm not a big fan of their shaw lou bao. I've eaten many Shanghai restaurant, this one isn't that great or that bad. The place seems to be filled with tourists though, so they must really enjoy it. I prefer to eat at Joe's Shanghai.

The best Chinese food I have had in a long time

by SamuelAnderson

The culture is interesting - Shared tables. You come in by yourself and they seat you with others.

The food is very tasty. I liked the pork dumplings a lot. They also had some unusual soups and bean dishes.

The fried fish I had was very tasty as well. The cold sesame noodles were also very nice.

I always take my friends and relatives from out of town there whenever they are in the city.

  • Pros: Great food - Low prices - Definitely real china town chinese food
  • Cons: I went off my diet - the dining is casual so its fine for everyday but not a dress up place

Maybe the worst I've ever had?

by Kalbertio

Considering that I am Chinese, the food here for me was disgusting. There was a bad drift of air that smelled like bad tomatoes from the kitchen. The service wasn't horrible. The sweet and sour soup was too sour and tasted like it has been sitting for a while. Highly not recommended.

  • Pros: Cheap?
  • Cons: Food and atmosphere
