The Scene
It's a snug fit: Diners squeeze between tables to take seats at the banquettes lining the walls; those waiting for a table try to stay out of the way by snuggling up to the four-seat bar up front. Depending on your persuasion, the noise level is either enjoyably bustling or a bit too loud, but the energy in the room is good, and service is smart and efficient.
The Food
Mussels, steamed with a tiny bit of green chili and aromatic mint, and a fresh salad of cucumbers and ricotta salata prove that despite its enduring popularity, this place isn't resting on its laurels. The kitchen nails pasta dishes, including spicy linguine with clams and pancetta and perfect gnocchi. Entrees are quite good, especially the porcini-crusted cod and a nicely gamey lamb sirloin with cumin yogurt. Desserts are equally satisfying--try the ricotta cheesecake or the house sundae.

I went here for my first time, and thought the food was excellent. I got the apple, walnut, radicchio and gorgonzola salad. My friend got some type of a goat cheese salad with sort of "matchstick" vegetables. My apple salad was scrumptious, and my friend's goat cheese salad was also very nice. For entrees, I got the veal marsala(?) with shallots and mushrooms. It was divine! The veal was SO tender. My friend got some type of a fish in a pink cream sauce, with beans. I tried a bit, and it was very good. For dessert I got the Po sundae. It was very good although I would have liked a bit more fudge sauce. My friend got what I think was a dessert special that night...a warm apple tart with ice cream. The tart itself was of such a good quality...perfectly flaky. My cappuccino was also excellent. All in all, a wonderful dining experience. The only downside was, the tables are really packed in there...so much so that, in order to sit on the "other side" of the table, it requires pulling the table out into the aisle, so that the other person can get in/out from their seat. The noise level was also a bit loud, and with the tables being so close together, sometimes (as was apparently the case when I dined there), we had to endure the "whining" conversation of two young women next to us. They also had a very tiny bar that seats maybe 3-4 people, that seemed like a very nice place for a single person from the neighborhood to just be able to pop-in for an impromptu dinner. I would definitely return to this place for the food alone.

I have been eating at Po for dinner for years and the food, service, wine and atmospher get better every time I go. I am stunned that they are able to still impress me after all these years with their unbeleivable food, amazing wine and now incredible brunch! GO GO GO GO GO! The traditional egg fritatas are to die for, washed down with a proseco you feel like you are in Italy..... this is the best food experience yet! Reservations for dinner are nearly impossible, I highly reccommend their brunch to get a taste of the food. YUMMMMMMMMY!

I went here the other night and had a fabulous time. The dining room was tightly packed but my date and I lucked out by getting the seat next to the window so it was very intimate and romantic. We had the gorgonzola pine nut crusted salad with arugula and beets which was very unique and delicious and I ordered the black fettucine with mussels, sundried tomatoes, green chilis and scallions! It was amazingly yummy and I HIGHLY reccomend trying this place. It's definitely all about the food at this place. The overall ambiance is very chic New York without trying too hard and it is in a great location in the middle of the West Village. My date got the gnocchi and although my dish turned out to be the real winner both of us were happily pleased. Also we just stepped in at 8:45 pm on a Wed night and were seated immediately. It was busy but if there are seats open you will get one. I also did not feel rushed at all. The waiters were wonderful. When trying to decide between two of the white wines the waiter poured us a taste of each to decide. It was a very nice touch. It was beautiful night.

What to Drink:
The wine list is all Italian, and bottles are priced between $25 and $110. Valpolicella Classico '02 ($40) is fairly priced and quite good. If you bring your own bottle, the corkage fee is $20.
Save Money:
At just $48, the six-course tasting menu is a bargain. As per the norm, the entire table must participate.
