Vegetarian food tends to be associated with hippies, leftists, and, of course, health cranks, but this ancient East Village diner, a relic of the days of kosher cooking, makes some of the homiest and best vegetarian food in the city. Pierogis are what people love best here, but really, the whole menu works. You could almost forget it's vegetarian!

Old school diner that makes delicious veggie food even meat lovers will like. For under $10 get a plate of peirogies and a cup of barley mushroom soup.
Been going to B & H for over 25 years.. In the city where prohibitive prices could force a person to starve to death, this place is an absolute oasis. The soups, the challah, the tuna sandwich, and the coffee & dessert all hit the spot, and you can satisfy your appetite affordably. The staff is concerned, down to Earth, and pleasant. I am not sure why there are not more places like this in NY. There used to be a lot more dairy restaurants. This is one of the last of a (unfortunately) dying breed. 5 Stars!
B&H rocks. If you're in the 'hood, definitely stop in. the mushroom barley soup is amazing. As are the veggie lasagna and the mac & cheese. They guys who work there are super-firendly and you can't get cheaper home-cooked food in manhattan. It's best to go on a cold night with a close friend or a good book. Stay away if you're claustrophobic
