Editorial Review for Angel's Share – by Kara Zuaro

In Short
Nestled over a bookstore and through a busting Japanese restaurant, this intimate boîte was once one of Manhattan's best-kept secrets. Nowadays, word is out about the expert bartenders and tome of house cocktails, from the grasshopper to the lychee martini. Strict rules keep crowds controlled--there may be a wait, but guests are only admitted once a table opens. Through the slim bar room, the Victorian-style parlor remains a romantic refuge with draped windows and cozy seating.

This place used to be such a civilized place in midst of the craziness of the east village. now, it is just another bar - mobbed by the masses and has lost any sense of caring. There I was, with a date, ordered drinks, the bartenders were having a loud birthday party for our waiter (never this kind of staff partying before.) The birthday boy takes my check and decides i didn't tip enough (my bad, i did the math wrong, i always tip well) he explains things poorly, in the tone that bitter bartenders use in tourist places. Not cool. (i then made the correction) But, he then makes the point again to my date while i am in the restroom. Totally not right - and especially for a place that used be known for being discreet. I hate to say it, but another piece of the east village is gone forever.

My friend is a total flame. His feet never touch the ground. We went out for drinks. They said--we'll seat you at a 4-top. If another couple comes, you have to share. Not a problem. We sat side by side (see flame description). A foursome came, they told us we had to move. We said: our drinks just arrived, I'm eating my first chicken wing and we don't want to move. You said share, not total displacement. 5 minutes later: You have to move. Another foursome arrived. I said: cancel the order and send us the check. I returned the other appetizer, uneaten. I paid--debit card (foreshadowing). Confronted at the door with-- Why didn't you tip? I said--tipping is for good service, which is not what we got. 30 seconds: raging beefy bartender, glasses, anger from about ten years comes from nowhere, grabs me by the neck and throws me out. My friend comes flying after us. Bartender screams--f*ggot, f*ggot, 5 more times. My friend gives him the finger. I come out of shock, realize what just happened and lunged. My friend--a flamer with a lot of muscle--grabs me by the throat and hoists me out. Here's the kicker: the next day, I see that my account has been debited $20 in addition to the tab. E Village bar scene is thick and varied enough that you don't have to support these gangsters, if nothing else, out of solidarity. I'm sure the story is lopsided (they have their own crappy version) but violence is never a good thing--esp. to a customer! Hello!

Pros: lighting

Cons: womb of anger
