Editorial Review for Bohemian Hall Beer Garden – by Steven Stern
The Scene
Inside is a charming old dive bar--the walls are hung with signs in Czech and a jukebox often plays, unaccountably, Prince. Outside is another world: A green, spacious expanse Manhattanites only dream of, with picnic tables under trees and a small bandshell where polka bands play. A night under the stars with a pitcher of pilsner is the cheapest European vacation around.
The Draw
Patrons are mostly locals, but in this neighborhood that means bohemians of all sorts--from old Czech guys to nouveau-outer-borough hipsters. There's a full bar, of course, but the only thing to get is beer. There are several great Czech and German beers on tap (Pilsner Urquell, Starapromen and Spaten dark), and many more bottled. Watch for occasional special kegs of hard-to-find imports, like the rich and complex dark beer, Gambrinus. The heft of the chunky mugs alone inspires Old-World fantasies.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoYou can use your credit card in the restaurant. But if you're just drinking, you'll have to fork out cash.
The ExtrasThe single downstairs bathrooms are, thankfully, not the only ones--instead, head upstairs to the virtually unknown restrooms with more stalls, shorter waits and less mess.
Look GoodThe Bohemian Hall can host a party for 50 or more people. Call for more information.

On a warm night, there is no better place to take a group of friends. Wide open, boisterous, friendly, fun.

I've never not had fun at this place, and I kind of doubt it's possible. You know about the huge drinking playground and reasonable prices, but what really makes this place special is the cross-section of people who hang out here. On any given night, you'll run into college kids, school teachers (me, for example) corporate types getting to know their colleagues better, huge Eastern European families, and maybe even your favorite great-aunt. The shared seating at picnic tables guarantees that you will mingle with them all. So, wear whatever you want, get to the ATM, snag your table early, and prepare for something different and more fun than you'd imagine.
