Editorial Review for Burp Castle – by Riva Froymovich

In Short
A white gate, draped in sprawling greenery, protects the entrance to the self-proclaimed temple of beer worship. Inside, Gregorian-like chants and a gumball machine-turned-nut vendor greet an over 25 crowd. Petite wooden tables sit beneath wall murals that transport drinkers back to the Middle Ages. A cloaked bartender, or Brewist Monk, serves up 12 different drafts and up to 600 bottles, including Belgian Trappist and Sixpoint Craft ales, from a small bar.

I live in this neighborhood and love this bar. From the outside you wouldn't think much of but once you walk in you really understand this place. The place is surprisingly clean and original. There are murals on all walls, nice crown-molding and dark wood bars and seating. The crowd is typical East Village (which is partly why I like this place) and most people are there just to chill and have a few beers and good conversation. The bartenders (sometimes 'Monks' sometimes not) will shush the crowd if it gets too rowdy. It is a small place, so don't go with a large group. Also note, they only serve beer and wine. I would come back here any night of the week.

Pros: Original Decor, Friendly People and Staff

Cons: Drinks are slightly more expensive, small place

Not your average Blue Moon and Hoegaarden place, nice selection of Belgium beers. Also very tasty fruit beers, I drink them as a desert. They do not have food but they allow you to order from menus they have from other places, I went at night so it may be different during the day. If you like trying different beer this place is for you.

Pros: Not crowded. Outside seeting area available

Cons: Small, tight seating
