The Scene
Even if you're in top physical shape, you may find the myriad of exercise options at this mega-gym a little dizzying. A consultation with one of the complex's sharp staff members is a must for creating a personalized regimen from the multitude of workout programs, team sports and dance classes.
The Workout
A day at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers can call to mind a trip around the world. As you test your climbing skills on the facility's rock wall--the largest in the city--it's not hard to imagine a trek up Mount Everest. Lessons in jazz dance and Latin fusion moves will have you leaping across the map. Kayaking and water aerobics may remind the poetic of the Seven Seas. There's also an indoor running track, 200-meter banked competition track, boxing ring, 25-yard pool, sand volleyball pit, two sun decks, a spa and extensive cardio and strength-training areas.

Chelsea Sports Club has unbelievable diversity in terms of its work-out offerings. If you can't find something physical you like to do here, then you should just give up altogether. From a gorgeous Olympic-sized pool, to the squishy 1/4 mile indoor track, to the boxing ring and basketball courts (not to mention, of course, weights and cardio machines), this is definitely a full-service athletic facility. Also, the staff is friendly and helpful, and it never gets overcrowded, even during peak work out times. The one complaint I have regards the locker room. It is really not that nice. I mean, it's clean, I think, but feels really outdated and a bit run down. If they just upgraded the locker rooms a bit, this place would be perfecto.

This facility has all the machines, the saunas, the pools, the classes-- including rock climbing, boxing, track, yoga and beach volleyball--that any club might have. But it also has the river, which makes it truly magical. This club is built upon a pier that lurches out over the Hudson, and from every vantage point, a pieceof New York City's western waterway is visible. Imagine a class at dawn, that starts in near darkness and develops as morning light bounces off the water. The cafe is huge, and comes with sushi bar, salads, smoothies, tv screens-- and views of the river. A giant sundeck is open during warm weather, right on the river. There's also a full service spa onsite. So for those who want an extraordinary gym experience, and a real sense of getting away from it all, get yourself over to Chelsea Piers!
Pros: classes and equipment; river views; cafe
