Editorial Review for Mars Bar – by Kerry Burke and Angela Gaimari

In Short
Plaintive neon beer signs are the only clues that the broken-glass bricks and spray-painted murals aren't housing a sordid den of illicit activities. Inside, trash art by the hard-drinking regulars hangs above the long scarred bar; the jukebox blares thrash. Inside you'll find all manner of artists manque--"freelance" writers, painters without portfolios, musicians long between bands--drink with alkies, junkies and the co-dependent women who love them.

Insider Tips

On the Menu

The cheap bottled beers make fine chasers, but Mars is about liquor. Ask for a shot and the tattooed barmaid babe will fill your glass. A warning: Stay with priced-to-move top-shelf liquors. The house hooch is too close to gasoline.

The first time I went here it was the last stop of our night and we were definitely drunk. I had no idea what to expect but one of my friends has been going for years so we went. It's small and dirty with graffiti over every square inch of space. I personally had a great time and have been back a few times since. This place is NOT for everyone so I don't recommend it for that but if you're the type of person that would enjoy something like this than check it out. Definitely one of the last places of it's kind left.

Pros: Dank and dirty!

If so, then this is it! If you are interested in an adventure, then come here. If you don't want the regulars demanding your attention through wacky stunts you can't possibly ignore, go somewhere else. Also, the bartenders are so beyond the insanity of the regulars that they won't speak to you beyond what you've ordered. After my night there, I can see why.

Pros: Insane regulars, Cheap, Adventurous

Cons: , Insane regulars
