Editorial Review for New York Cares – by Citysearch Staff

The Background
New York Cares magnanimously develops volunteer projects in conjunction with schools, environmental organizations and social and human services serving Greater New York. Interested volunteers may attend an orientation, then receive a monthly bulletin of varied projects, ranging from gardening to tutoring to spending time with seniors.

The Experience
It also sponsors four unique annual events, for which volunteers are welcome with no orientation needed: New York Cares Day, in October, is a citywide effort to revitalize public schools; winter's New York Cares Coat Drive collects thousands of warm coats for people in need; Secret Santa volunteers answer more than 6,000 "Dear Santa" letters by anonymously granting gift wishes to city children; and Spring Clean-Up Day mobilizes New Yorkers to spruce up city parks, community gardens, and open spaces.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

NY Cares is a fantastic organization. Its model has been so successful that it has been emulated in over 60 other places in the US. In addition to the noble reasons for volunteering, NY Cares makes it very easy. There is a HUGE variety of projects to choose from, and you have flexibility--time of day, day of week, type of project, etc. Plus, all of the projects are in places close to public transportation. Break out of your shell, meet some good people, see parts of the city you're not accustomed to or stick to what you know. Just get involved!

Pros: flexibility & choice

Cons: projects fill up fast
