SAPPHIRE - 15 YEARS OF SPARKLE: 2007 marks Sapphire?s 15th year as a downtown hot spot, featuring world-class DJs and avant-garde events. A champion of DJ culture, music, art and dance, Sapphire boasts a Cabaret License (quite literally, a license which allows patrons to dance), a crisp sound system, dance floor, full bar and backroom art gallery. The small nightclub/lounge L.E.S. hideaway perpetuates an energetic party vibe, attracting a cool, quirky, trendy, and occasional celebrity, crowd. Long-running weekly Sapphire events like Funk You (Fridays), The New Jazzy Show (Saturdays) and Deep See (Tuesdays) feature talented DJs spinning an intelligent mix of music ? from House and Electro to Rock & Roll, to Hip-Hop, depending on the night. Monthly parties, special events, private parties and rotating art exhibits add to the club?s unique, dynamic atmosphere.

The Scene
This large-studio-sized room with a bar at one end may be small, but its heart is big enough to accommodate one of New York's more friendly party vibes. The decor favors minimalism over kitsch or swank, the only decoration being red velvet curtains around the walls and rotating artwork on the walls (like every other store/club/amorphous space these days, Sapphire considers itself a gallery, too).

The Draw
Downtown hipsters mingle with average joes at the tables, and a sweaty crowd somehow finds room in the middle to rub shoulders to the sounds of different DJs every night. It's a popular spot for neighborhood stores and music industry folks to throw parties in, too. Sapphire's DJ lineup balances eclecticism with crowd-pleasing populism--expect house, hip-hop, reggae, Latin, disco and more, sometimes within the space of a single set.
