Editorial Review for Sapphire Lounge – by Ben Williams
The Scene
This large-studio-sized room with a bar at one end may be small, but its heart is big enough to accommodate one of New York's more friendly party vibes. The decor favors minimalism over kitsch or swank, the only decoration being red velvet curtains around the walls and rotating artwork on the walls (like every other store/club/amorphous space these days, Sapphire considers itself a gallery, too).
The Draw
Downtown hipsters mingle with average joes at the tables, and a sweaty crowd somehow finds room in the middle to rub shoulders to the sounds of different DJs every night. It's a popular spot for neighborhood stores and music industry folks to throw parties in, too. Sapphire's DJ lineup balances eclecticism with crowd-pleasing populism--expect house, hip-hop, reggae, Latin, disco and more, sometimes within the space of a single set.

So I reserved a the room in the back of the bar for a brithday party. I even gave a guest list for my friends to get in free until a certain time. But when I got there, there were other people in my room. I was told that I was supposed to work it out with the manager to have that space. But, I already confirmed it through email, so what was the point of confirming it again?????? So my friend talked to the manager and booted the pther people out. So when I mentioned the guest list, no one knew what I was talking about, and thankfully being smart, I brought my own copy and gave it to them. The bartender took it and kept it by her....shouldn't the bouncer have it???? Anyway, at first the music sucked, then it picked up a bit. The DJ could've been better though. I just think it was unorganized and the people looked like they didn't want to be there.
Pros: Free before 11
Cons: Bad service, poor management

As the other review I am giving Sapphire Lounge 2 Stars only because the music was good. We set up with the manager to bring in about 20 people for a birthday celebration. He was very nice but had told us that their policy is not to reserve tables, so we should come early and secure tables ourselves. So really there is no reason to set up in advance that you are having a party....right? We arrived there around 9pm, and as we walked in the smell of cheap cleaning products was overwhelming in the back room and slightly strong in the main room. So we were forced to grab two tables in the main room. It turned out to be a good choice because we later found out that everyone had to clear out of the back room at 11pm for a private party that had reserved the space. I thought there was no Reserving?!?! Then it got worse, our friends were sitting at the two small corner tables and were told they had to give up one of the tables for another group that had arrived. So now we had 20 people with one small table, a couch/bench and two small chairs. And the dance floor was EXTREMELY packed, so we no longer had any place to interact with our friends. Here are some other negatives, there is only 1 bathroom for women and it is very true that the bar back kept violently banging like a lunatic on the door almost as soon as you made it into the bathroom. The bartenders water the drinks down big time, the DJ stopped the music and made a really rude speech about "if we don't check our coats now they will personally take them". And we didn't have any issues with the waitress, accept for she was barely around. Honestly, if you are two people and want to hear some good music, I guess you should go there. But stick to drinking beer, don't expect to sit or really dance on the jam packed floor, and if you are a woman and have to go to the bathroom you are better off leaving Sapphire and going into LUV 24-7 next door to use the toilet.
Pros: Good set of music
Cons: Watered down drinks, Space, Staff & Bathroom
