Delightful Surprise. Its not all about sushi as this place is probably one of the more authentic and less explored Japanese yakiniku options in the city. Order in small plates and come in larger groups as the place is very friendly like that. The cream croquettes are the bomb.

makes me happy. my sister and i always go for kaisendon and satisfy my yamaimo cravings. i'm not a fan of the okonomiyaki here but the prices are very reasonable and we always leave happy! seared fatty salmon is yumm and they have my favorite oo-long hai! HAI!!

love this place. love the food. it's the only place you can get yummy authentic japanese comfort food. it helps if you know what to order. and you can't beat the prices. highly recommended.

User review by yakkers. came to the restaurant with three friends on a quiet sunday afternoon. great looking place with a wide assortment of wonderful food. great yakitori, even better to try the raw crab and fried tofu.

Typical Izakaya - You'd better try it!.
Very popular style Izakaya (Sake and small portion of sake-friendly dishes ).
Good for casual dinner with jeans and sneakers.
If you like Sakagura but you feel it's too much, you'd better try Yokocho.
Deep Fried Skewers are good and still rare to find in NYC.
They also have Korean BBQ and very beer-friendly Korean appetizer(like KimChee).

Eat there all the time. Authentic and fun..
It's very authentic and one of my favorite places. I have no idea what the one person who didn't like the place has against Yokocho. My wife is Japanese, as are lots of our friends, and we go there regularly.
The food is very good (its not iron chef level, but still great), and the prices are pretty nice. Don't expect to be filled up by one small dish, you should order a few, or a combination, if you are eating dinner. The wait staff is very attentive; though if the place is really packed, then you may have to flag someone.
This place isn't for elegant dining or a first date place (unless youre in college). It's where you go to eat some good food and have a good drink. There is an elegant bar in the front, (however only groups of 4 can go in).
I love it.

not the same. same atmosphere but food was better before years ago- octopus was like chewing a rubber tire- dumplings tasted artificial

just awesome. As a Japanese native, I've lived in the Tristate area for over 8 years, but I was just so amazed at this place. This place is the most Japanese it can ever get. The signs, the specials menus, food, and even all the waitstaff are ALL TOTALLY Japanese. This place is worth an one-hour drive. I am so coming back here again, as much as I can.

The Scene
The consistent lines at this bustling Japanese "tapas" hot spot don't lie: Yokocho's fresh, reasonably priced comfort food and social atmosphere draw a youthful clientele of cultural natives and gaijin alike. A 20-foot grill, simple wood-furnished decor and hip Asian-American servers transport you to a lively Tokyo food joint.
The Food
The extensive menu ranges from top-notch Korean-derived barbecue (the succulent prime rib with bone sizzles in savory pepper-and-apple sauce) to udon noodles to Japanese stews. But the best offerings are the a la carte grilled items, such as the chicken with scallion skewers and asparagus with bacon rolls. Other small dishes, such as the fragrant sesame oil-scented raw spicy tuna, are excellent with a beer-sized mug of cold oolong tea. Also excellent is the okonomiyaki, a tangy cabbage, pork and shrimp frittata topped with bonito flakes and a dollop of mayonnaise.

perfect snacks for late night drinking!. This place is open til 3am, so I like to go after going out for drinks when you get the munchies. True, the service is hardly on par with the finer restaurants in NYC, but I go for the energy and the tasty "tapas"-like seafood treats that are perfect with beer or sake. The little fried sardines and spicy tuna over rice are a couple of favorites.
