Editorial Review for Mondo Kim's – by Andy Battaglia
The Scene
Mondo Kim's, the appropriately named heart of the Kim's chain, offers some of the city's best selections of everything from music to videos to comic books. If it's weird and cool, Mondo Kim's probably has it.
The Goods
The main level's CD racks are filled with a discriminating rock selection (both so-called "establishment" artists and newer indie rockers), in addition to deep wells of reggae and dub, old folk, R&B, art jazz, electronic music and even a black metal section. The used CD section is large and among the most consistently rewarding in the city. Upstairs is a good selection of vinyl, both pricey collectors' items and newer dance, rock and oddities. The video selection here is deep, as well, with entire walls devoted to different countries and both well-known and obscure directors. The DVD selection is growing, too.

I have purchased quite a few DVD's from Kim's in the East Village because of their great selection. However, after purchasing a factory sealed DVD that was missing the actual DVD in the case, I was treated rudely. Specifically, I was told that no manager could help and that I would have to contact the manufacturer to get a replacement DVD. When asked about contacting the owner they told me that his name was "Mr. Kim and he is unreachable". That alone is enough to question their business ethics. There isn't anything close to a reasonable guarantee of minimum services . No matter if it costs a bit more at other places, I won't buy anything from Kim's again. Buyer beware.

I went shopping for my brother's birthday, my brother being the hardest person in the world to shop for. I found a DVD of "Destroy All Monsters", a Godzilla movie that even Amazon didn't have at the time. Now, once a year, I know where to go to shop for my brother.
