The crowds swell on the weekends, gathering fresh greens, organically grown veggies and fruits, potted plants, herbs and cut flowers. Weekdays provide a more mellow shopping experience: People on lunch breaks pass through quickly, leaving lots of browsing space for locals and chefs looking for daily special ingredients. It's hard to go back to your local grocery store's anemic produce after trying the farm-fresh goods at the heart of the market. Whole-grain baked goods are trucked in from upstate New York, and fresh cheeses come from Amish farms. Many specialty items can be found here as well such as fresh pheasant, wild boar, fingerling potatoes and fiddlehead ferns.

Union Square has stepped up lately to become a lively summer park, and this is one of the things that gives it character. The flowers, produce and homemade edibles definitely draw you in, even if you thought you were just passing by.
