The crowds swell on the weekends, gathering fresh greens, organically grown veggies and fruits, potted plants, herbs and cut flowers. Weekdays provide a more mellow shopping experience: People on lunch breaks pass through quickly, leaving lots of browsing space for locals and chefs looking for daily special ingredients. It's hard to go back to your local grocery store's anemic produce after trying the farm-fresh goods at the heart of the market. Whole-grain baked goods are trucked in from upstate New York, and fresh cheeses come from Amish farms. Many specialty items can be found here as well…
Summer in Manhattan- not without the Union Green market

There's something for everyone here. Plan to carry a lot of heavy bags home ( bring a friend to help - it 's more fun with a friend ) They sell everything from fresh fruit and veggies from the nearby farms- to fresh flowers, home made cheese, fresh baked bread, lot's of organics and grass fed meat. My daughter loves the fresh pressed cider and they always have samples of something to give away. I go several times every summer - it' s our tradition.

Union Square has stepped up lately to become a lively summer park, and this is one of the things that gives it character. The flowers, produce and homemade edibles definitely draw you in, even if you thought you were just passing by.
