Editorial Review for Bar 4 – by Susan Chenelle
The Scene
Launched by bar business veterans Ted Mann and Larry Hyland, Bar 4 has taken over the space formerly occupied by the lesbian bar Sanctuary. The new proprietors, along with designer Louis Delgado, have banished the pool table, aligned the walls with the ubiquitous banquettes flanked by low tables and movable ottomans, painted the walls in earth tones and installed a small stage in the front window.
The Draw
The bar is slightly dazzling--or perhaps that's just the starry-eyed prospect of a freshly shaken martini. The mirror behind the bar reflects the glasses on the shelves, lending the bar area a sort of ethereal glow. The martini, in all its glorious classic and flavored forms, is the foundation of the drink list, which also includes champagne cocktails, scotches, teas and coffee drinks.

I went for drinks on a Friday evening with some colleagues. A 2-man band played, and the crowd was very quiet. Then, the bartender "shushed" my friend twice and asked me once to be quiet. The band itself was good, but they seemed to be singing the same monotonous type of song so I didn't think it was strange that my friends and I were using a "bar"-appropriate volume of talking. I was rather suprised that we were expected to remain quiet throughout the entire time the band was playing when it seemed as though the band was playing background music. I am not going back.
Pros: not crowded, I did see some good-looking guys
Cons: you have to be quiet while the band is playing

Stopped in for a beer after work. It was shortly after 6 p.m. and I guess they just opened. There were a bunch of people there to sign up for the open mic. I just wanted a beer. I sat down in a barstool. And sat. And waited. "You're gonna have to give me a few minutes, OK?" Yeah fine whatever. I sit and wait some more. She wasn't even busy doing anything! I think she may have casually counted a small stack of bills. Bartender's friend walks in and they exchange hugs and start chatting. I ask, "Do you sell beer here or not?" "Yes we sell beer! but you're going to have to give me like 5 minutes!" I just wanted a can of PBR. I didn't say a word and just walked out. I won't be returning. Plenty of other bars to spend my money at in the neighborhood. In case the owner or manager sees this - female bartender, longish brown wavy hair, cranky attitude -- get rid of her!
Pros: none
Cons: Can't get a drink, cranky bartender attitude.
