Editorial Review for Passerby--CLOSED – by Amy Douthett
The Scene
The most instantly striking feature in the addition to Gavin Brown's way-west gallery space is the "Saturday Night Fever"-style floor, complete with flashing colored squares. And if you thought that John Travolta or the Bee Gees were the inspiration behind that one, then you've obviously never heard of Piotr Uklanski, the man behind the concept behind the floor, which was built by Brown himself. The space is small and self-consciously unfinished, but makes good use of confusing mirrors to give the impression of space.
The Draw
The main complaint among the patrons seemed to be the tiny fold-up stools, made for a rear the size of a postage stamp. Be wise and line up along the walls, where the comfort of a chair back makes up for the wooden pain beneath. The space attracts fashion types and gallerygoers, fitting the bar's name and demographic.

This place brings a new feel to the oft clichéd scene that is the meatpacking district. The best part is easily the crowd. No one goes to impress people, buy tables, or drop their name on the proverbial "list". No velvet rope, no bottles, just straight fun. The bartenders/DJs (they rotate depending on the night) are real chill, and some nights they even have a fresh juice bar so you can have a spanish red orange screw driver, or fresh grapefruit juice with vodka. And for the audiophiles out there, I've been told that this place has one of "the best sound systems in new york" (this quote coming from a musician). The only con of this place is that it's small, but that's almost a plus, because it forces people to be social and enjoy the atmosphere. If there was any a place in new york that was about people going out and having fun, this is it. Check it out, they've got the studio 54 floor.
Pros: The people, the ambience, the music.
Cons: Small, no sign outside, so easy to miss. hence the name "passerby"
