The Scene
Popular as it's become, this vast lounge inside a corner of Grand Central Terminal always feels like a secret. The 25-foot-high room, which in the 1920s housed the office and reception hall of John W. Campbell, recreates the connoisseur owner's decor with wall-to-wall, Florentine-inspired rugs, tapestry sofas and the original, colorfully painted wooden ceiling. Subtle lighting and jazz and swing tunes stir a carefree, after-work mood.
The Draw
Most disarming of all are the house cocktails. A Flapper's Delight, with champagne, papaya juice and amaretto, is a cookie of a drink, served in a flute with a stylish twirl of orange peel. For heartier types, there's the enormous brandy glass of Prohibition Punch--Appleton Rum Estate VX, passion fruit juice and Grand Marnier, topped off at the table with champagne--which holds the knockout power of about three drinks. Whimsy aside, the bar also serves a perfect Manhattan.

Where to SitFor a quieter setting and a view of the room, try the small balcony area that holds a pool table and can be reserved for parties.
What to DrinkThe bar mixes up basics with fantastic results. Try the sweet-sour Gimlet.
Look GoodThe bar tactfully but firmly enforces a dress code, so jeans and sneakers are a no-go.

My wife was meeting up with my friends and I for an afterwork drink. We were already there having our drinks and some food. When my wife got to the door she was greeted by a very rude, very snooty hostess named Lisa who flat out refused to let her in,... even to inform us she couldn't get in!!!! That's right, no offer to kindly wait while she informed us of the tragic dress code infraction and that my wife was waiting at the entrance, nothing,.. except a whole lot of unnecessary attitude,.. thanks Lisa. Give this place a pass.

We've been to the The Campbell Apartment many times in the past, and last night we were meeting friends already at the bar. The maitre'd/host/ bouncer, big rude guy, stopped us in our tracks and would not let us in because of my serious fashion error. How was I dressed? Jeans? t-shirt? sandals? No none of those... I was wearing a black suit and crisp white open shirt. On my feet, I was wearing black Vans (a flat canvass rubber sole shoe ). The maitre'd/host was not going to have any discussion at all, he was actually quite snooty about it. So we all were forced to leave....and what good fortune that across the hallway, is Chipriani's where we were quickly seated and could actually carry on a conversation without yelling which we'd have to do at The Campbell Apartment, a very over rated, loud, expensive and unfriendly establishment..
