The Scene – Since 1999, Babbo's loveable (and much less expensive) little cousin has been going like gangbusters. The candle-lit bar is the destination of trendy wine-sippers and snackers, and the rustic-chic dining room, with brick arches that open onto a tight sidewalk terrazza, is booked weeks in advance. Expect to wait, even with reservations; once you're seated, service is knowledgeable and friendly. – – The Food – Chef-partner Mark Ladner has found his stride with this robust Roman menu. Gratis rosemary focaccia finds no better match than his inspired antipasti:…

Editor's Tips

Look Good:
If you don't know your "fregola" from your "farro," consult the menu's glossary. It'll also enlighten you with the meaning of "lupa": she-wolf.
What to Drink:
The stellar Italian wine list features many rare, regional selections in the $20 to $35 range. Ciro's San Felice Ducale, a rootsy red from Calabria, is a fave.
Know Before You Go:
Parties of seven or more must order the tasting menu, which is $60 per person.

  9. we tried 3 different desserts and loved them all (tartufo, grapefruit sorbet, panna cotta), but overall it was a better-than-mediocre and pretty pleasant experience.

  9. The waiter was gracious and didn't seem offended when we didn't order any wine or dessert (1 of us was starting the South Beach Diet and the other 2 wanted to be supportive).

  11. The food was great, the wine was great.
  12. went on a Sunday and the bar staff was quite knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions.

  14. Take a table in the bar area and be prepared for a satisfying and inexpensive meal.
  15. All in all, this place is good for a decent plate of pasta, some good wine and a fun time - depth of flavor of food is only OK though.
  16. The sloppy looking women tending bar in extremely unstylish white buttondown shirts, looking like they're hanging out and don't want to be interrupted by customers have replaced the professional, skilled bartenders of the past who knew how to suspend beli
  17. Also, I tend to drink a large amount of water, and the servers were so attentive.
  18. While the wine list is not cheap the variety is amazing and half carafes are available.
  19. Waiter suggested a very nice wine to a companion who is a wine nut -- but not extensively versed on Italian wines -- that we all were impressed by.
  20. The service was friendly and very competent - the waiter recommended a fantastic inexpensive wine.
  21. went here w/ great expectations and was greatly disappointed; the food was good, not great and vastly overpriced- one salad, two pasta dishes, two demi-carafes of red wine- $100 (tax and tip); rediculous; orechiette came w/ so little brocoli rape that it

  25. great italian wines.
  26. We love to sit at the bar, eat a light supper, and drink the great wines by the quarto.

  28. The waits are annoying - my advice is to try and sit at the bar - generally a shorter wait.
  29. The wine list is full of reasonable good selections.
  30. Food couldnt be better, service and staff superb, ambience just terrific, and wine list right on target with the rich and flavorful foods.

  4. The food was decent and very well priced, but small in size and just ok.
  5. Extremely noisy- Mediocre food
  6. Atmosphere and impeccable service at this place; i was so excited b/c i had heard this was the premiere authentic roman osteria in new york.
  7. Take a table in the bar area and be prepared for a satisfying and inexpensive meal.
  8. WIth every time I eat at a famous chef restaurant, I become more and more convinced that folks deceive themselves into believing that the food before them is something remarkable.
  9. great atmosphere, good food
  10. have lived in Manhattan for nearly 40 years and this was the worst meal i have ever experienced.
  11. The house made lamb sausage was flat out the best sausage I have ever eaten anywhere anytime.
  12. Ricotta gnochi are OK - the sausage is delicious, but when isn't sausage?
  13. The food was great, the wine was great.
  14. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, and exception service!
  15. BTW, there is no bad pasta in Rome, but there is terrible Pizza.
  16. great vibe and even better food.
  17. Mediocre food, very very loud atmosphere, halfway through our dinner we literally had to stop talking as it became painful to fight the noise in the restaurant to hear each other.
  18. The fish was ok but not great anh his attitude was poor enough to prevent me from coming back or recommending LUPA.
  19. All in all, this place is good for a decent plate of pasta, some good wine and a fun time - depth of flavor of food is only OK though.
  20. The food was excellent at a recent brunch.
  21. Every dish was meticulously crafted to bring out the best flavor.
  22. Great food but prima-dona chef
  23. The gnocchi with sausage and fennel was delicious, and even the 10 year old loved it; the spagetti pomodoro had lovely huge chunks of garlic but was a bit too al dente for my taste.
  24. The dish is fantastic and so is this restaurant.
  25. particularly liked the grilled whole bass, it was delicious.
  26. The pork saltimbocca was delicious, cooked beautifully.
  27. Can't beat that for authentic home cooking!
  28. The salmon was superb.
  29. The food is great but the portions are VERY SMALL you can hardly see them in your plate!
  30. love Babbo and don't mind waiting a month for the reservation, but when you are in the mood for good food today and not looking to mortgage your house to get it, this is the place to go.
  31. Insanely good Italian food
  32. The buccatini pasta dish was fantastic as was the pork shins which actually tasted like roses.
  33. The menu was different and interesting, the food was incredible especially for the price.
  34. Had the fried pork shin, which is a-m-a-z-i-n-g, not for the faint of heart but so yummy especially if you like meats covered with sweetness, in this case honey and roses.
  35. Decent food, served by assclowns
  36. know from now I'll spread the word that Lupa is not a place to go for excellent cuisine.
  37. Pecorina brusselsprouts tasted only from the cheese, baccala appetizer was like something from out of a can, beet with pistacchio was ok but could have used someth extra likelemon juice, Saltimbocca was dry and uninspired and the pasta not any better than

  45. My picky husband was worried about finding something to eat (the menu is small and selective), but loved his lamb.
  46. Some of the absolute best, most innovative Italian food in the city.
  47. This little, cozy restaurant opened my eyes to the hidden flavors of Italian cuisine.
  48. We started with great veggies and an amazing order of cured meats that they make in house.
  49. Try Picallo Angelo for a great Italian meal.
  50. The pork chop that followed was great, moist and the good kind of fatty.
  51. The quality of the food is fantastic but we found the menu a little restricting.
  52. The food is consistantly wonderful.
  53. we also had a pasta pomodoro, which is consistently one of my favorites, the pasta is cooked just right and the sauce doesn't overwhelm the pasta.
  54. would not waste your money at "LUPA"-the food might be good but the service is horrific!
  55. Now, the price is not what makes this place suck, but it competes with the food for leaving a bad taste in your mouth.
  56. Great food, service, value
  57. Great food
  58. Bad bland food
  59. great food, excellent wine list, knowledgable staff.
  60. In addition to the Italian food problem, I have to ask myself, how ,much people are wiling to convince themselves that the food is good simply because of the celebrity owner.
  61. The food was surprisingly good for such a busy restaurant and the prices are reasonable.
  62. Be forewarned that this probably is not the place for you and your grandma on Saturday night, but if you crave good food and and exciting atmosphere you should check it out.
  63. my partner thought it was a bit too salty and i can definately agree that you have to enjoy batali-style hardcore italian food to like it (read: a bit heavier on the salt than most of us are used to).
  64. This meal made up for a bad experience we had all just had at the clearly over-praised restaurant THE TASTING ROOM.
  65. I've been here more than once and the food is fantastic!
  66. went here w/ great expectations and was greatly disappointed; the food was good, not great and vastly overpriced- one salad, two pasta dishes, two demi-carafes of red wine- $100 (tax and tip); rediculous; orechiette came w/ so little brocoli rape that it
  67. The chicken was so dry, that it could not be swallowed without washing it down with water.
  68. We ate at the bar Sunday, shared a wonderful turkey ragu pasta, frutti di mare, our favorite escarole and pecorino salad and the best tartuffo in the city.
  69. Incredible food and friendly staff.
  70. I've been to Italy many times so I am familar with the cuisine, but the waiter was helpful with the slightly criptic menu, and made some good recommendations.
  71. the house-cured meats were excellent but the antipasti dishes were only ok.
  72. The portions are smaller than usual at American restaurants (making it even MORE classic Italian, where portions generally ARE smaller), but the dishes are all fairly rich, so it is absolutely satisfying.
  73. The surroundings, the food, and the great staff make this place superb.
  74. The meal was fantastic and our waitress was kind and friendly, not overbearing.
  75. Great food for a crowd
  76. All analogies aside, Lupa is salt heavy to the point of turning out inedible food.
  77. Lupa has the simplist food with the most exquisite flavors.
  78. Heirloom tomatoes with buffalo riccotta - incredibly yummy, served at room temperature to enhance the flavors of the fresh herbs and tomatoes.
  79. An incredible value and some of the BEST ITALIAN food anywhere in the country!
  80. Especially enjoyed the cauliflower pasta.
  81. Pastas are bountiful and have interesting twists; the Bavette Cacio has a bread crumb topping.
  82. highly recommend this fine entertaining establishment for anyone especially those they enjoy authentic regional italian dining.
  83. We ended up at a restaurant a few blocks down called "Scuderia" with wonderful, attentive service and great food!
  84. Pork shin with honey sauce was interesting, but the small piece of meat was wrapped in a larger piece of "fat" that was inedible.
  85. Our food was wonderful.
  86. The pasta was the best that I've had outside out of Italy, cooked perfect, al dente!
  87. This food is bad and bland enough said.
  88. The prosciutto was delicious.
  89. Their pastas are unbelievably fresh, meats cooked perfectly, and sauces with such sharp flavor they must be strained several times.
  90. but while the food was great, it wasn't truly 'authentic roman'-- even though they use italian for the menu (kudos), the penne arrabiatta was far from authentic, and the pricey appetizers were not worth it.
  91. The food and entire experience was fabulous !
  92. Turns out, there's a reason that professional food critics exist - this restaurant is great.
  93. Delightful light lemon sauce on perfect al dente linguine with fresh lobster.
  94. The cured meat plate is delicious if you like that sort of thing, which I do.
  95. The wait staff are rude, the food is mediocre, and it was 80 degrees in the restaurant (and you sit on these horrible plastic covered seats that make your clothes stick to you).
  96. The food is exceptional, from the variety of the house anti pasti to the delicious pastas and yes, try the tartufo for dessert!
  97. The food at Lupa is definitely delicious!
  98. The food here is fantastic!

  102. Other than that- the food was wonderful and the service was great.
  103. The food is amazing, as well as the ambiance and service.
  104. loved his three meat fettucini, great mix of meat, garlic, tomatoes and juts dressed in the meat sauce, not floating in it, which is a mistake many American-Italian restaurants make.
  105. The food and service was outstanding.
  106. (Of course, cold food raises another question.)
  107. apps were nice, the pasta we had was their ricotta and sausage gnocchi.
  108. The menu is always interesting- on this visit we had cured meats (of course) and an amazing parsley salad which was a parsley and root salad with lemon and pancetta- out of this world!
  109. Great bread.
  110. The entrees look great, too, but I haven't ordered one yet - too addicted to the pasta.
  111. Excellent fresh food.
  112. The experience is great and a value for the authetic Italian food and celeb chef Mario Batalli is involved!
  113. The food was tasty, the service was junior varsity - at best.
  114. Lunch began with great bread and olive oil.
  115. Moral of the story, if you order meat at Lupa always ask for little or no salt or you'll be sorry.
  116. the pasta carbonara is always tasty.
  117. The food was excellent and the ambience was very pleasant.
  118. The atmosphere was very cozy, our waiter was top-notch, and the food was fantastic.

  121. Great pasta - but salty meats
  122. The service was terrific and the food spectacular.
  123. completely tasty and edible and served in very cool little bowls, etc. nothing too extraordinary i'd have to admit but good nonetheless.
  124. We substituted with the pork saltimbocca, which was great, but not the special, Pork Arosta.
  125. will give it that the pasta was al dente and somewhat tasty, but there was nothing memorable about the meal.

  2. but while the food was great, it wasn't truly 'authentic roman'-- even though they use italian for the menu (kudos), the penne arrabiatta was far from authentic, and the pricey appetizers were not worth it.
  3. The gnocchi with sausage and fennel was delicious, and even the 10 year old loved it; the spagetti pomodoro had lovely huge chunks of garlic but was a bit too al dente for my taste.
  4. Service was ok, the sommelier wasn't committed and just pointed at the more expensive bottles.
  5. The prices were more than reasonable for NYC.
  6. Food was definitely overpriced and the service sucked.
  7. The experience is great and a value for the authetic Italian food and celeb chef Mario Batalli is involved!
  8. The menu was different and interesting, the food was incredible especially for the price.
  9. In short it was an awful dinner that I feel like my husband and I wasted our money on.
  10. The service was friendly and very competent - the waiter recommended a fantastic inexpensive wine.
  11. went here w/ great expectations and was greatly disappointed; the food was good, not great and vastly overpriced- one salad, two pasta dishes, two demi-carafes of red wine- $100 (tax and tip); rediculous; orechiette came w/ so little brocoli rape that it
  12. Now, the price is not what makes this place suck, but it competes with the food for leaving a bad taste in your mouth.
  13. The food is totally overpriced and boring.
  14. Really, you can't get a better affordable Italian meal anywhere.
  15. Took 4wks lead-time to get a decent Saturday night reservation, but was well worth the wait.
  16. The prices are great too!
  17. The main courses were pricey and uneventfull - I don't know, maybe we ordered the wrong thing -
  18. The food was surprisingly good for such a busy restaurant and the prices are reasonable.
  19. Great food, service, value
  20. The food is great but the portions are VERY SMALL you can hardly see them in your plate!
  21. Take a table in the bar area and be prepared for a satisfying and inexpensive meal.
  22. would not waste your money at "LUPA"-the food might be good but the service is horrific!
  23. While the wine list is not cheap the variety is amazing and half carafes are available.
  24. The portions are smaller than usual at American restaurants (making it even MORE classic Italian, where portions generally ARE smaller), but the dishes are all fairly rich, so it is absolutely satisfying.
wait time

  1. was a big fan of this restaurant for a long long time but these days I feel very disappointed by how those waiters treat us.
  2. Food presented well and the service once we were seated was great but we had a long wait for our table (about half an hour) even though I had pre-booked.
  3. The lemon sorbet was the best dessert I have had in a long time.

terrible service+ decent food= subpar dining

by stevenblacks

i was waiting for what seemed like an hour and change for my steak, which wouldnt have been so awful if i wasnt met with extremely rude gestures from my waitress when i inquired about the delay. when the steak arrived, the seasoning was decent , but it was overcooked. the experiecne wasnt terrible, but with so many options in this big city why settle for less?

Batali's comments and insensitive and hurtful

by Jonathan Stewarts

I can't believe Batali is comparing bankers to Hitler and Stalin. Agree with the previous post that it is completely insensitive. Why can't he just stick to making food? I can only assume that if he is busy attending conferences and media events offering his political views he is definitely not paying attention to his businesses and the quality of his food. Given this, and the insensitivity he recently displayed in comparing bankers to Hitler, I will no longer eat at his restaurants and will encourage others to do the same.

Boycott Mario Batali Restaurants

by Matt Jefferson

Mario Batali's recent comment comparing bankers to Hitler and Stalin are downright disgusting and irresponsible (reference at bottom of review). While there are many views on bankers during these challenging times, his references to such dictators who executed many people for their religion and / or beliefs is hurtful and ignorant. I do not believe it is in this world's best interest to support him or his restaurants given his most recent comments.
