The worst restaurant in america. This is my first review. Here goes.. The place could not look any worse than it does. Slower than standing still waitresses that bring over water after you've been there for 15 minutes. She lazily slopped it onto my table not paying any attention, spilling some in the process. It was 12 noon on sunday, we were the only people there the whole time and I noticed a sizeable chunk of rotted food tucked under the leg of the table. This could not have been there from today as they had just opened up.

The food- We ordered the chicken/guacamole burrito and a beef burrito. Same sharp as a marble waitress then proceeds to start windexing all the glass countertops. With a windex cloud fogging the joint up, the food arrives. Again dropped down on the table half sliding onto me. The beef burrito looked like Alpo canned. It was some beef stew thing. I aint seen food that rough since Fort Benning. The rice was disgusting and glowed some flourescent orange color. I was absolutely starving and really craving some mexican but I had to put it down. My chicken burrito was the worst I've ever eaten especially the soupy guac. Me and the wife got the check and bounced.

Bottom Line.

If you want a good budget mexican spot try FESTIVAL MEXICANA on rivington and essex. Or in the East Village check out Paquitos on 1st ave.

A Place. I think it was good. They had a real room - chairs, tables, etc. Food was there - the check was complete with food total and tax and stuff. Overall a real experience. I'd go again sometime in the future.

Amazingly bad...... This place has been here for ever and has a nice funky oldschool LES ambiance and friendly service. That said, the food has gone from cheap, greasy, but tasty tex-mex to really atrocious cheap, greasy, dominican tex-mex. Really some of the worst "Mexican" food I've ever had and I'm not the pickiest gordito....

Good (and cheap) Mexican Food. The service is great, everyone was friendly. I don't see why everyone says the food was bad...it wasn't the night my friends and I went (quesadilla was delicious). Not really a big, decorative place but definitely a place to go to enjoy good food and drinks with friends. Next time, I want to get a margarita to go!

The Worst Food Ever. It is amazing that this place had a crowd and the food was so lousy...expensive too . Five of us ate there and nothing was good. The margaritas don't taste good and have almost no tequila in them. The rice and beans aren't even any good. The appetizers and meal were all bad nobody finished them

Cheap Mexican food and drink served late, amid tropical murals and unpretentious charm.. In Short
Open until two in the morning at least, and often later, Hat serves satisfying, reasonably priced Mexican food to a mixed crowd of L.E.S. locals and hungry club-goers. Burritos stuffed with beef, pork, avocado and various combinations thereof are the most popular; also available are enchiladas, tostadas and so forth. An assortment of entrees are offered as well: roast pork sauteed with oranges, shrimp fajitas and much more.

not mexican food. the only time this place is worth stopping by is in the summer where you can get margaritas to go. other than that, i don't know what is the fascination that everyone has with this place? the food is crap!!! its not even mexican!! the staff is all puerto ricans and so is half their menu. (not good spanish food either.) i would rather go to bennys than here, and thats not saying much. for real mexican, go to the new place on houston, right off of clinton.

Cheap Eats!. This place is great. Very cheap Mexican food and plenty of it. Magaritas are delicious as well. The place is kinda dingy but who the heck cares. I am there for the food.

the REAL texmex in town. YUM-MY we say! the chimas are PHENOM! worth the trip downtown -- and get a roadie for the ride home!

What more do you want ?. I don't understand the negative reviews here... I mean, it's yummy & dirt-cheap, the service is friendly, it's open late, and the margaritas are enormous and dee-lish. Sure, it's not the most authentic Mexican food around, but what do you expect for a couple of bucks?
