Fantastic Greek Food- Great Value – We went to Opa because we were looking for a good Greek Restaurant in New York... we read some good reviews online and decided to try it...
Well, this was a GREAT discovery.
First of all the food is great, fantastic.. the best Greek food I have eaten since... since I went to Greece!
Second, the atmosphere is fun, the service was perfect, even more than perfect, the owner made us feel completely at home.
Third, the price was totally reasonable...
All in all the kind of place you want to go to, recommend to your family/ friends.
We are for sure coming back any time we are down to NYC, and we are contemplating organizing events there.
It is really that good, and that fun, do not be fouled by appearences!
Watch your step! – The food is great...I ordered the roast chicken with lemon potatoes the first time and most recently the lamb kebobs. The dining area in the back is festive and comfortable...but watch your step ! There is one step down that comes by surprise. The light was off and i fell!
Great for parties as well as intimate dinner – My husband and I have been going to Opa! for years and love it. It looks like a hole in the wall from the outside and even as you're walking in, but soon you come to a delightful indoor garden. Despite the tacky decorations, it is warm, cozy, friendly and relaxing. The Greek home style cooking is wonderful, with some dishes prepared by Patty, the owner, herself. We have used Opa! for family dinners whenever kids were among us and for family parties (they have an adjacent party room). Everyone has had a great time at the parties we did there and loved the food. Patty and staff always do everything they can to accommodate us. Waitresses are sometimes a bit slow, but this gives us more time to relax and enjoy. And there's a lot of food.
Finally, the reasonable prices top it all off. We've never had anything but a delightful, happy evening at Opa!
Great food! – I just love this place. From the outside it looks like nothing special and walking in it looks even worse but go through to the back room (where everyone is seated) and you end up in a great atmoshpere.
The food is delicious, especially their grilled octopus. The owner always walks around and chats with you for a bit and very often gives an appetizer on the house.
The waitresses are sometimes a little slow but on the other hand it gives you chance to enjoy yourself instead of rushing through a meal.
This is my Greek go-to place and I'd reccomend it to anyone.
Great place for Greek food! – They also have outdoor seating in the back! I like it - staff is pretty nice, food is great - like a homecooked meal! I would deffinitely recommend this to everyone!
Great food, great service, great price – My friend and I went to Opa! for dinner the other night and had a wonderful experience. Both the food and service were very good, and the bill was quite reasonable. I was a little nervous when we first walked in, but once we were ushered into the back room, found the atmosphere to be quite charming. I will definitely be returning to Opa! in the future.
Home style Greek food – We had very very nice meal there the other day, we had usual Greek dish, saganaki, cheese that starts with letter ?K? (they set it on fire at the table?), meat ball, etc etc. I felt it was home style meal experience. Waitress was very nice gal, owners were nice. Ambience is not the best, but that kind add good flavor to our experience in good way. It?s not one of those flashy Mediterranean restaurants opened up in the area, but we love it. Pricing was not too bad.
Down Home - Greek Style – I've been eating at Opa! Opa! since it opened. I love the home-made food and the home-made atmosphere. To the folks who object to non-smiley faces, I must reply that I have never been treated with such cool indifference or fake friendlines as I have been in, what some consider, more upscale restaurants. Stamatis is o.k. except that it is often very very busy and very very noisy and I don't find the food particularly worth the money, the noise or the crowd. A feature that has not been mentioned is that Opa! has tables outside --- and no, the garden is not landscaped in the Columbus Avenue sense, but it's comfortable and enjoyable on a cool evening. As to slow table service, if I am in a hurry, I get take-out or go to Burger King up the street. Opa! is the kind of place you can sit and enjoy and no one rushes you!!!! The hostess who is so warm and welcoming is the owner. And, for those of you who "tolerate" older waiters/waitresses and are critical of the younger not so-experienced waiters/waitresses I suggest that you might take the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the break from the assembly line. Oh, and remember that you too can be out of sorts, even on the job. We've all been there. Be kind. Be understanding. For heaven sakes, Enjoy!!!
Felt Like a Home Cooked Meal in a Small Town – We were there for lunch this week and, after having read all the reviews, it was about what we expected. This is not supposed to be a fine dining experince- it is a small mom + pop operation in the best sort of way. The food was inexpensive, delicious and had a home-cooked feel. I don't eat much Greek food, so I couldn't comment on its authenticity, but there were several patrons that were Greek-speaking and we enjoyed our food. The woman who sat us (maybe one of the owners?) was very welcoming. Our server was definitely no waitressing dynamo, but she was helpful with the menu and friendly enough. The atmopshere also felt very homemade with all sorts of odd-ball, tacky touches. We sat in the sunroom in back- which is fun in an aesthetically-challenged way and a good alternative to a cafe when it's too cold outside.
amazing gyros!! poor service!! get takeout!! – i'd been to opa! once for a late lunch a few weeks ago with some friends. the place was almost empty and the service was totally subpar although the food was super amazing and really cheap. the waitress was also pretty old and slow so the poor service didn't really bother me (by poor service i mean getting our drinks, apps, and entrees at the same time and having to get up and find her to get more soda and taziki). last week i went there for dinner and there were a handful of other couples and a young waitress and the service was even worse than the lasttime i had been there. the food was still amazing though. next time i'll get takeout.
