“The music was up and down, sometimes the hip hop selections were just not that good (also contribuiting to that sleepy feel).”
“have been to No Malice a few times and it has always been a great place to hang out.”
“great, friendly service”
“The music was good though and drinks were cheap.”
No Malice forefills its hype. last week i had one of the most enjoyable experiences, in my NY city bar career. I tend to go out to spots on a regular basis and at the no malice palace i found great blend of hip hop, and reggae, a bit of other stuff. It was pretty busy and when i looked at the bar i was a bit nervous. thinking it would take a long time to get a drink, but i was in and out in know time. i stayed practically the whole night. leaving cause my peeps were ready to go, im assuming exhaution from the dancing. Recommendations on this spot were true, and i had a great time. They'll definetely see me again.
Awesome East Village Bar with huge crowds on the weekends.
The No Malice Palace has always been one of my favorite local spots in the East Village. Its comfortable, well-designed and staffed with friendly (and s*xy) bartenders. During the week it's the perfect spot to chill with friends either at the bar or on one of the sofas (one comes complete with a crackling, fake fire). There's also an outdoor patio for smokers who don't want to block the sidewalk.
They have DJs on Friday and Saturday nights playing old school hip hop and that's when the place gets totally jammed. It's a friendly, good-looking crowd and the sound system is way above-average. What more can you ask for?
Now they just installed a flat-screen TV over the bar which is a no no in my book but they keep it off most of the time and it's the only thing I can think of that I don't love about No Malice. When you go, ask for Phil - the owner. He's a friendly fella with ice-blue eyes and a booming laugh. All in all - one of the best East Village bars. Period. Another bonus: the taco place next door is awesome.
I was disappointed. After seeing all the good reviews on citysearch, I went there on a Saturday night with some friends. We got there around 2am, were expecting the place to be packed. However, it was probably 80% full and no one was dancing. The crowd was rather on the sketchy side. The music was good though and drinks were cheap.
"Below Average" sums it up..
I've ended up at this place accidentally three times so far for parties. After the first, I wouldn't have gone again if I realized it was the same place. It seems constantly crowded and way too dark. Drinks are overpriced for their size, pour, and quality. I don't know what everyone here found so alluring about the atmosphere - the place is pitch black aside from some lounge seats, and any time the DJ found something danceable that didn't sound like it came off of "Club Hits 2000", it was too crowded to actually dance.
After the third time I showed up here, I memorized the address so I wouldn't make the same mistake again.
Funny, Chill, No Frills Atmosphere. The music, mood and drinks are right. Bartenders are great with ocassional buybacks and there are comfy lounges to sink into.
Great music with dancing, atmosphere, drink prices and staff!.
I can only say great things about No Malice Palace. I have had 3 parties there in the last year and every time I'm more and more impressed. The dancing is great with a live DJ all the time. There is an outdoor seating area where you can cool off and carry a conversation on with friends. The bar staff are pleasant to work with and they always are good looking.
I recently read an article about it in New York Magazine (nymag DOT com/bestofny/fun/2007/28817/) and couldn't agree more with what they say. HIGHLY Recommend!!!!
Well Done....
LOVED this place. The staff was wonderful - no pretension at all - same with the crowd. Was a little b & t at the beginning of the night, but by midnight, they were gone. The music was EXCELLENT - Evan is an awesome dj...
I know the general review is that it's not a great dancing spot - I disagree. Plenty of room to wiggle your donkey(they wont let me curse)...
one of my favorite bars in the city.
awesome bar: great staff, cheap & well-made drinks, SUPERB music.
anyone saying anything negative about no malice should stay at espn zone or heartland brewery...
Forget "ehhhh," this place is cool. You know what? I've only been to this place 2 times, and both times were a bucketful of fun. I like this bar. I've lived in Alphabet City for 3 years but only discovered the aptly named No Malice Palace recently, and in addition to having a great name, the staff is nice, the people look good, and the atmosphere is a refreshing balance of hip and friendly. Pay the Palace a visit, I say.
Ehhhh. Went here on Saturday night. Not very impressed. It was sooo dark and loud and way too crowded, you need supersonic earplugs and night vision goggles just to get by. Was glad to leave. The only decent thing was the drink prices. $10 for two beers and a cranberry & soda.
