Created as a literary hangout by journalistic superstud Sebastian Junger, Half King provides a much-needed harbor for people of all professions lost in the wilderness of far west Chelsea.
Worst Service Ever.
Two well-dressed, polite friends and I stopped here for a drink. The bartender studiously ignored us. It wasn't crowded, it was 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. The host and hostess, both with the most affected speech [seriously touched - they were like the wanna-be retail fashionistas on SNL, as played by Will Ferrell, Pierce Brosnan and Jimmy Fallon] I've ever heard, were defending the snobby bartender instead of making him serve us. He literally served the people to our right, to our left and at the other end of the bar, most of whom arrived after we did. Horrible.
A friend who lives in the 'hood said they will only wait on the literati and the neighborhood people, and "everyone knows that". Wow. Junger doesn't need the money, I guess, since the success of "The Perfect Storm". Egalitarian proletariat my a$$. I'd like to see one of the fishermen from Gloucester get served here.
Pretty much agree with every positive review on here..
The headline says it all.
Have never been disappointed at Half King. Accommodating staff. Friendly crowd. Good vibe.
Great all around. Love this place for lunch, brunch and dinner. Reasonably priced and really good service, their meals are always delicious. Also right next to the new fabulous Highline Park!! A must on weekends!
great pub. im a little mad they took the lamb burger off the menu, it was sooo good. anyway its a great pub. nice selection of beer. bartend mike is the man. food is good quality pub food
Shunning the pretension of the neighborhood's more snooty art galleries, this Chelsea bar and grill serves up classic fare in an easy-going environment..
Ever faced the challenge of curtailing an insatiable beef-and-beer craving while strolling through the land of 1,000 salads? Find refuge at this top-notch, food-focused neighborhood pub, where the burger reigns supreme, in all its glory, with a chipotle mayo crown. The patrons tend toward a mix of boys about town, tired moms in need of a break, and gallery-goers seeking an offbeat diversion from the art scene of 10th Avenue. Happy hour brings a rush, and if you're lucky enough to get a seat you'll enjoy prompt service, good beer and tasty food.
Hits: The dimly lit, brick-walled space is divided into cozy rooms, a perfect complement to the homey menu.
Misses: Given the far west locale, it's best-suited to West Chelsea employees, residents and those already hanging in the 'hood.
Great Service. I love coming here with my friends. The menu is refreshing, and they have some really great specialty drinks. I really like the side room where I usually sit and its brick walls and awesome decor. The crowd is just right not pretentious and not snobby. Unusual for Chelsea. The prices are just where they need to be, not too expensive for fresh food. Ya and the burgers really are amazing. I recommend this place for happy hour and if you work or live in Chelsea their lunch is not bad either.
Nice Burgers. They make a nice burger and all the bar foods you want. A little pricey, but try at least once. Good beer selection too. The place is a little out of the way.
stick to the beer. Been here a couple of times, not a bad place to have a few beers. The crowd is collegian, nothing exciting. The food is not that good.
This is a fun Place and great Pub food. My friends and I have made The Half King a regular hang out for over a year now. The burgers are the best in the city especially the salmon Crab cake burger, MY FAVORITE. They can get very creative with the daily specials so dont just order from the regular menu. The service is fast and friendly, the staff really adds to the atmosphere of this place and they always make us feel welcome, it is very laid back. I like eating at the bar booths but if you are looking for a quieter meal sit in the dining room or small lounge room, it can get loud at the bar. They also have a very cute back garden and front cafe for people watching. They have a small section out front for smokers. They also have interesting reading and photography events on a Monday night.
Will Never Return. The staff could not have been ruder. The bartenders had attitude, were very unaccomidating, and did not want to get you your drinks. I will never be back to this place and I do not recomend anyone goes here unless they want a miserable time. STAY AWAY!!!!
