Great Place for a party 2 through 8. I went with a party of 6 (we had an Open Table reservation.) Everyone had a great time. It is a boisterous environment, but I could still hear most everything said at our table. We shared some courses and not others. I was very pleased with the classier style of the servers not clearing dishes until all diners at the table were done with the current course. Not a single complaint on the food and the staff was attentive.
Watch out for overcharging.
The service was pedestrian at best. When I asked the waiter what the Ravioli del Giorno was today, I was told "It is a square pasta".
An $8 glass of Chardonnay became $10 on my bill. This Palermo-style rip-off was the nearest I got to an Italian experience at Macelleria. There are plenty of better Italian restaurants in New York.
Not impressed with their version of a "steak".
Honestly, we tried this restaurant for a few reasons:
1. Location in the meat packing district
2. Reviews from citysearch members
3. We've never been to an Italian steakhouse
All of the above sounded like the makings of a fun evening. We had reservations and we were seated immediately. The waitstaff spoke Italian and that added a nice layer of authenticity. The menu was relatively sparse and that was fine since we came for the steak. We ordered some appetizers. For one, the oysters were fresh and ice cold (as they should be), the mozzarella was pillow soft subtlely salty, the proscuitto was buttery and delicious. We even tried the chicken liver and that was good. We were ready for the steaks. Two of us ordered steak, we had one pork chop and one pasta dish. I will tell you the pumpkin ravioli was outstanding and this ends the positive portion of the review because the rest of the meal went to hell. The steaks were "charred" and not in a good way. I will use the term "burnt" because that was the predominant flavor. They were a less than medium, but still managed to be pretty blackened. These cuts of meat never knew the meaning of seasoning. We've had better steak at Outback. The pig died in vain for the pork chop was over done and dry. Did I mention that each steak was over $40 WITHOUT a side. BTW, sides are $7 a piece. The fries were decent because you really can't screw up fries. The spinach was sad and gave new meaning to the term "it aint easy bein' green". The roasted potatoes were unceremoniously tossed in olive oil and sent to their deaths in an oven about 100 degrees too high. Very disappointing. The desserts were a bit more forgiving with a very rich NY Cheesecake and a light and creamy tiramisu. Cappuccinos were typical. Nothing about this restaurant stood out and looked like it earned the Citysearch's Best of NYC. I have a feeling the owner knows a lot of people and comp'd quite a few dinners to get a good review.
Macelleria on Behind the Burner. I just read all about NY's Macelleria on Behind the Burner. com!
warm staff, great food. as the weather gets warmer, macelleria is one of my favorite restaurants to dine outside. no matter what i'm in the mood for, there's always something on the menu i can turn to. if i want to get a small nibble and drinks with the girls, the salumi plates and zucchini fries are delicious. if i'm craving pasta, any of their dishes fit the bill - my favorite is the garganelli. their porterhouse for two can easily serve four. desserts are pretty standard, but very delicious. i'm not a big drinker, but the wine list looks pretty comprehensive. i would recommend this place to anybody looking for a niceish location that isn't too stuffy.
Rude owner/manager.
I'll start this out by saying I am hungry. I have never stepped foot in this place and never will because of the rude and discouraging service I received from a manager/owner in regards to a delivery order.
I placed an order from a delivery website but soon received a phone call saying the restaurant did not deliver to my area (I am 5 Village/small blocks away). So, I call the restaurant to find out the delivery area and I'm told "it's only walking distance." When I ask for more clarification, I'm put on hold 3 long times while they ask the floor manager. He then gets on the phone and tells me they will deliver to just me, if I will tell him what I ordered. After I repeated my single dish order, I am put on hold again and another man, this one rude, asks why i wanted him to lose 1 employee to deliver just a single dish. On the delivery website, the minimum order is set at $8 and my dish is $19. His reply? "Well, I don't know what to say." I don't understand why a restaurant would put themselves on a delivery website if they don't want to deliver. They then tell me their delivery person has never been to my "area." So I have to give them walking directions to my apartment. All .21 miles of it.
As I write this, I don't know if my food is coming. But who berates a customer for coming to you for business based on your own guidelines? Take your business to somewhere that will appreciate it.
Best lasagna in town. Macelleria is one of my favorite spots to eat in the city when I want something that tastes like home. I love the way the restaurant is set up and the waiters and managers are always nice and usually remember your name. I regularly have their pastas and salads and when I'm in the mood to indulge, I partake in a tbone or porterhouse. I'm not a huge fan of the meatpacking district, a little too trendy during the week and bridge and tunnel during the weekend, but other than that, I love Macelleria.
Great happy hour. 2 for 1 drinks? I'm there. If you want to make a night of it, it's a great place to grab a steak with the boys after spending time at the bar. Nice, old world style bartender. Love it.
Great place to brunch. Macelleria is an absolute gem for weekend brunches when the weather is nice. Its location is perfect for people watching and the food is amazing. The Sicilian Egg toast plus a mimosa makes any sunday morning for me. And it's always nice to indulge in one of their pastas...mmm...yummy carbs!
A Nightmare that became a wonderful Comedy. The words "Unbelievably Bad" get thrown a lot these days, but if your desire is to experience modern gastronomical catastrophe at its most gruesome depths, then Macelleria is the dump for you. A prime location wasted like Chateau Margot used for Sangria, Macelleria lures its patrons in with charming decor and the promise of italian delicacy. Begin with unclean tables, add one part bad service, 2 parts bad food, and 3 parts disgruntled employees, and you get one complete awful mess. How Macelleria stays in business is a mystery that only its managerially disabled staff may understand. I have never, ever, had a worse dining experience anywhere in New York City. You are better off going to your local diner, at least they will refill your water. More like Gabinetteria. Macelleria Boia!
