From The Owner of Virage

Bistro in the East Village with a menu that slants French but also welcomes tastes from around the Mediterranean and Middle East.

What Our Expert Scouts Say

August 14, 2012

Consistently good tapas, Mediterranean staples and reasonably priced wine and cocktails. Outdoor seating for good E. Village people watching.

Good but service uneven & need to get rid of rude water guy. I've gone to this restaurant for years; it's a stand-by. Love their tuna noicoise salad, their lamb burger, good brunch & tapas choices, weekday lunch specials.

However their service has gone downhill; a lot of their staff are rude and unattentive.

Case in point: last Sunday I went for a late lunch and waited 10 minutes to get a menu and water. When it did finally arrive, I asked for some bread. Ten minutes later and still breadless, I asked for some bread. The waitress said "Are you planning on ordering?" "Yes", I said, as soon as I get my bread." Finally the bread arrived 5 minutes later and I ordered two tapas and two glasses of Prosecco.

During my meal, I required more bread and got attitude from the water/bread guy.

I continued my meal and decided to top it off w/ a cappuccino. At this point as my water glass was empty, I requested some water from the water/bread guy. I got a "What do you want now" from him. Not being being a person who is easily intimidated, I repeated my request.

And finally got some more water.

They need to get rid of this water/bread guy. Another case in point: a few months ago, I arrived at 4:15 and asked if they were serving tapas. I got a disguntled "No, we are serving brunch" from the same guy. Luckily the waiter came over and when I told him what happened, he say...no problem...have a drink...and look at the menu..it will be past the bunch time and the computer will take the order.

And I did...a glass of prosecco followed by a lamb dish and another glass of prosecco followed by a cappucino and a slice of their key lime pie and the best part was that only the waiter dealt w/ me. Thankfully I did not see the water/bread guy again, asthe waiter took care of all of my needs

Love it here!. When exploring the East Village, look no further than Virage for a delicious Mediterranean meal. Whether dining al fresco or indoors, the friendly service, atmosphere, and casual-French bistro vibe adds to the appeal of this gem. I recommend the Moroccan Free

Range Chicken Tagine with apricot, couscous & spicy carrots and the Pan Roasted Salmon with saffron & asparagus risotto. Both are must-trys! Bon apetit!

Old Faithful!. I love this place. So many times we end up wandering around the EV looking for some place new and ultimately end up back here. Everything on the menu is great and very reasonable. Their veggie burgers are the best in town!

Love this place!. My husband and I go to Virage quite often, and being that we live in Queens, it's a trek for us! We stumbled upon Virage accidentally and loved it so much we take everyone we know there. We've tried so many things on their menu and really, you can't go wrong. We've never had anything we didn't love. And don't leave without dessert - the molten chocolate cake is to die for!

Expensive yoghurt bowl. Nice place to hang out during weekend afternoons. Food was decent but is over priced for that quality. The menu is incompleted, many of the things are not listed there. The witress was not very informative and friendly. I ordered the Linguine Aglio E Olio( pasta with garlis, mshroom, blk olive,) for my dad, it was quite good. And I got a fruit bowl for myself, it was waaaaay too expensive ($12,) just a medium size bowl with 70% full of fruits, some (tasteless) yoghurt on top.

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. On my way to the mens room I happened to peek into the kitchen. Shocked that it could pass the health inspection. Un-hygenic conditions witnessed. Owner / manager happened to be on location and I asked him if he thought these conditions were appropriate to prepare food for hundreds of daily customers. He asked me to leave!!! And told the waitress not to serve me the food (which I was probably going to cancel any way). It used to be much nicer place but since increase in its popularity, has lost it all. Avoid this restaurant like the plague.

Good Brunch Spot. We've only been there for brunch, but every time, we were seated without extensive wait times. The service was good and they don't rush you even when they have a lot of people waiting. They have nice outdoor seating for those warm days, and they're open late night.

Great late night eatery.... Since this place is open 24hrs I only go late at night when I'm hungry. I always order something from their "special menu of the day", usually an appetizer from that category. Then I would order my usual penne with eggplants and sundried tomatoes. Food isn't bad, there is nothing to complain about. Service is decent.

update your menupages!!!!!. I live around the corner so it's quick to pick up. Food is alright but unreasonably priced. When I call in an order after a quick look at menupages they always tell me the menu I have is old and they don't serve said food anymore or they charge 5 or more then the price listed. If anyone assosiated with Virage reads this, UPDATE YOUR MENU!!!!!

Very nice neighborhood standby. This is my husband and my go-to place when we don't feel like trying some place new....I especially love the chicken cous-cous and rabbit dishes. Virage is mellow, quiet enough for good conversation, and never too crowded. Yet, they still serve some excellent dishes.
