BEST FAMILY CHRISTMAS DINNER RESTAURANT – Went to St. Andrews on Saturday night December 3, 2011 with twelve of my family members to eat after seeing the radio city christmas show. I had never been to this restaurant before. My family and i were so impressed with the Staff and Food and Service. Everyone loved their meals and enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. I would go back to this restaurant in a heartbeat. Thanks to the staff for making our christmas family dinner one that we will never forget! Great Job!
Not impressed – As a Scotsman living in New York, was not at all impressed with this place. The couple of times I have visited, there were no Scottish staff ... all Irish or mexicans. The service was poor, meals were over-priced during busy times and the food was very bland, particularly the haggis. I took an American friend there to taste the haggis and we were sorely disappointed ... a disgrace to our national dish. Get some Scottish staff in there, stop hiking up your prices and get yourself a new chef and I may consider revisiting.
Citysearch Editorial Review – When this spacious Scottish tavern moved down the street, it doubled to 5,000-square-feet. It gained a second floor, a private lounge area that seats 22 people and a killer view of St. Mary’s Cathedral. St. Andrew’s partly owes its popularity to its central location in close proximity to the Theater District and the many midtown office buildings, but it also deserves credit for doing many things well. The bar's drink menu includes 250 single malt Scotches (among the largest collection in the city), 125 beers and an impressive wine selection. Even the food is a notch above the usual tavern grub. And as an added bonus, the helpful bartenders, dressed in kilts, know their stuff.
One of the best Midtown bars – I have recently discovered this mid town gem. The scotch menu is probably the best in the city. I had one of the best bartenders I've ever met Amanda help me with my selections. When we sat down for dinner our server Tracy was extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was great and the staff made you feel right at home. I look forward to visiting again soon and getting some more scotch tips from Amanda.
One of the worst dinner experiences... – Maybe the pub grub is the way to go with this restaurant. The service was terrible & there wasn't any Scottish dishes on the dinner menu (ended up ordering the filet mignon which wasn't bad but not what I wanted to eat at a Scottish restaurant). The night started out that they didn't have any Tenant's Lager on draft, which really isn't a big deal, but the waitress got annoyed when I asked for a few minutes to go through the beer menu to find something else. Then, when we asked the waitress if they had a Haggis dinner (instead of the appetizer) the waitress jumped to tell us that we have to spend $21.95 per person (which me & my fiance thought was fairly rude considering that we weren't trying have a cheap dinner & to be accused of it made me want to walk out the restaurant on the spot - the only thing that stopped me is that it was our anniversary & I didn't want to ruin the night). The haggis appetizer we ordered was awful because the haggis was all moist & pale in color (it tasted like the bag had burst & water had gotten into the haggis). The entrees were prepared well & were good, but like I mentioned earlier, I was really hoping for a Scottish dish. To top off the night, the waitress never asked one how our meal was or if we needed a refill on our drinks (so we only had one drink each, which we both finished shortly after the meal came to the table). I would possibly give their bar menu a try, but would never go there for dinner again.
AWESOME FISH and CHIPS – After an afternoon of pub crawling I brought one of my friends to ST. Andrews. I actually have eaten there before. I try to eat there at least twice a year. I find it very charming. I was glad to sit down and have a nice chilled magners. We both ordered fish and chips. It was one of the best I have had on this side of the atlantic. I love the fact it is just one piece of fish with a llittle chips. Everyone one there is extremely friendly and accomondating. My friend had never been there before and didnt know you are not able to order the pub grub in the back of the restaurant and we were seated back there. They had absolutley no problem serving us fish and chips I can not wait to go there again!!!!!!
Great! – I recently moved offices just around the corner from St. Andrews.....very convenient! Its the place to be if you enjoy whiskey they have hundreds of single malts behind the bar.. One of the top authentic spots I've seen in Manhattan. The kilted bartenders know exactly what they are serving and dont just recite some mumbo jumbo lable discription when educating you on the whiskey you're buying. The food is very good, I have only eaten from the bar menu but they offer a full dinner menu also. Try the haggis, you may be as reluctant as I was but you'll be in for a pleasent surprise. The bar can get a little crowded but theres plenty of seating, and its well worth the wait, if only for the beer list, there must be 200 choices!
The only Scottish Restaurant in NYC – I love love love this restaurant. Kilted bartenders never disappoint with their suggestions. If you like beer try the Belhaven Wee Heavy or McEwan's. I tried Haggis for the first time here and it was delish, who knew? After our perfectly cooked Filet Mignon and Striped Bass, our friendly waitress recommended the Sticky Pudding for dessert...ssssoooooo gggoooooodddd! Warm atmosphere, I'll be back again and again.
A piece of Scotland in Times Square – St. Andrew's is a great steak house, especially for those who appreciate the pride of Scotland and its people. Excellent food, and one of the few places you can try authentic Haggis if you dare. The beer and ale selection is very solid, I recommend the Belhaven Scottish Ale. A great place to meet friends and clients alike. If business travelers are looking for a NYC restaurant to call their own, St. Andrew's is an excellent choice. The wait staff is largely from Scotland, although I once called to make a reservation and the host was of far eastern descent. There is nothing wrong with that per se, but I was looking forward to the authenticity that the restaurant is known for and it was like a kick in the kilt! My last attempt to eat there was met with great disappointment as the kitchen was closed on a Tuesday night! Overall I strongly recommend St Andrew's.
This is my trully evening hang out in town. – I am a single-malt-Scotch lover and I used to work in the Belasco Theatre, right a cross the place. I haven't seen that many Scotch bar in Manhattan. They have massive collection of single malt Scotch Whisky. The bartenders are great and knew very well all of Scotch Whisky they serves. Especially Roger the funny guy. He will talk to you anything about Scotch Whisky and Beer, when you ask. About the food? I don't know that much about it, since I only hang out there for drink. Especially for single-malt-Scotch from Islay. Like Laphroaig, Lagavulin etc. Just remember! This is not a dive bar !!! Also don't forget to leave good tips to the staffs !!!
