What People Are Saying About Gnocco

The Scene – In the sweet but cramped back room, downtown claustrophobia somehow feels like old-world intimacy. There's a lot of Italian spoken--and occasionally sung--by both staff and patrons here. The owners staff the kitchen on a system: Recruit fresh-faced Italian chefs, train them in Modena and ship them to the East Village for a temporary tour of duty. – – The Food – All the imported talent in the kitchen makes for a refreshingly original menu. The namesake gnocco are crisp yet chewy squares of fried bread, served with a generous assortment of top-notch cured…

Great dinner last night
by tinabg at Citysearch
Had a party for 8 people in the garden there last night. Picked that place by walking by and checking it out. Loved the garden, so invited my friends there for a celebratory dinner. Then went online read the reviews and was terrified. Tried to change the reservation, but it was too late. And I'm so happy I didn't, as we had a blast there!
We were greeted by a welcoming host and seated right away even though most of our party hadn't arrived yet. The food was great! The bread was fresh and crisp, pastas, pizzas, filet mignon and branzini were delicious as well as the yogurt mousse desert. Great selection of wines, very friendly and attentive service. Everything was up to par. The atmosphere was very relaxed, it wasn't too crowded or too empty, not too noisy, not too quiet. My friends and I stayed there talking and laughing until almost midnight as nobody wanted to leave.
The garden is green and refreshing. Great option for al fresco Italian dining in East village! Would definitely go back and recommend to others! Sorry some people had a bad experience there. May be the restaurant changed something since then, as I definitely didn't encounter any of the things people here were complaining about.
Wedding rehearsal dinner

We have been going go gnocco for many years, and have never been disappointed by the food or service. They are both always exceptional.
Because of this, we decided to have our wedding rehearsal dinner at the restaurant, and it was absolutely fantastic. They accommodated our group of 25, and nothing about the evening was disappointing. Our server, Lauren, was absolutely fantastic and was always there when you needed her, but also never made us feel rushed or pressured which is amazing considering the size of our group and the fact that it was a rehearsal dinner.
The food was great, as always.
It was a great experience that I will never forget, and I'll have wonderful memories every time that I go back (which will be many).
Atrocious service, terrible experience

My friends and I went to Gnocco for the first time a few weeks ago - and I can wholeheartedly say that it will be the LAST. Upon arrival, we were escorted to the back patio area - covered in plywood walls and cement, I would hardly call this "atmosphere" but that much we could have lived with. We were told by the ungracious and unprofessional hostess that we had an hour and 45 minutes to eat before the next party. I understand the need to turn over tables, but to be given that restriction by the hostess before we had even taken our coats off?? How is that supposed to make us feel welcome or add to our dining "experience"?? I have NEVER been sat at a table with a prefaced time restraint. That was incredibly off-putting and further vetted by the waiter who was practically shoving us out the door. He couldn't present us with the check fast enough, did not even ask us if we wanted dessert, and immediately 2 people (including our server) came over to check if our bill was paid while we were still trying to finish the bottle of wine we had purchased. It was a horrific dining experience on every level. I emailed the management at Gnocco to let them know about our utter disappointment, and never received any sort of acknowledgment - which leads me to believe the ungracious staff is taking their cue from management.
Mixed Experience

This review is somewhat delayed-- I was at Gnocco about three weeks ago when it was warmer in the city. I was there with two friends around 9pm. The restaurant was relatively full at that time. We were seated in the garden as it was a nice night. I had a fresh salad and a pizza, which was pretty good. One friend tried the pasta, which seemed slightly undercooked. Our waiter did okay considering how many other tables he had. So, why not give them three stars, you ask? Because I was bitten by mosquitos like I have never been before. I have been in the city a long time, and the outdoor and garden dining experience is not new to me. But I have never left a restaurant so itchy or had memories of a meal as present as I have now in the way of the still-healing marks on my legs. Both of my friends had the same problem. And when we asked about citronella candles or anything to ward the bugs away, our waiter pointed to a lone candle at the waiters' station-- of course, that would be helpful to them, but not to diners. The food was okay, but not good enough to get me to try them again, not even in winter. My suggestion, if you live nearby, would be to order takeout.
Bad experience

I went to Gnocco last night and was very disappointed with both the food and service. The garden was nice and the pizza was good but the rest of the dishes were bland and tasteless and the service was unpleasant. Someone had recommended this place to me as having a good atmosphere but we didn't find this to be true at all. We will not be going back.
- Pros: Pizza, garden
- Cons: Service, food, atmosphere
