The Vibe
His peers have long since abandoned Soho for Chelsea, but Jeffrey Deitch is standing his ground (a short-lived Brooklyn addition in fall 2001 notwithstanding). There's a comfortable, not-quite-finished feel to his Soho empire, which includes a cavernous loft on Wooster Street and a more refined main space on Grand. The Wooster space hosts occasional site-specific installations and performances, while the more intimate Grand Street gallery is home to regular exhibits.
The Goods
Deitch has many friends in fashion and music circles, and his hip roster includes international stars Vanessa Beecroft and Mariko Mori as well as '80s legend Keith Haring, homegrown talent like Brad Kahlhamer, and the ascendant art-rock group Fischerspooner. Openings spill out into the streets of this popular shopping neighborhood long after the free beer has dried up, so if your aim is to see rather than be seen, go on a quiet weekday afternoon.
