The Scene – Expats and curious Americans have been popping into Tea and Sympathy to sample the curiosities of British cuisine for years. Now they only have to go next door to find authentic fish 'n' chips, wrapped in a London newspaper to boot. – – The Food – The key element to a proper British chip is fat, and the flabby, pale yellow specimens here come close to the ideal. If you really love them, try the chip buttie (a chip sandwich, essentially). Either way, salt and vinegar are essential. It's probably best to stick to the simpler fish dishes (halibut, salmon,…

  1. New York is a tough place and has probably the best and most varied food choices anywhere.
  2. Since my husband doesn't eat meat I thought this would be a great place to try.
  3. The fish was great we tried the traditional cod and also hammock.
  4. Fish n chips are one of my favorite food in the world and I was very excited.
  5. The fish always tastes fresh, and the chips are tasty.
  6. The fish was OK, at best, and the large is more like a small, but the chips were thoroughly disgusting.
  7. The food is prepared, served, and tastes exactly as it would at a good chippy in the UK.
  8. If you're looking for an authentic experience at a chippy in Manhattan, it's well worth the price.
  9. I've got a good appitite, but i had to admit defeat, i think the fish was related to Jaws, & a good portion of real chips to go with it.
  10. The prices aren't cheap, but the food is delicious.
  11. know that sides like a lot of negatives but if you put up with all that you'll be treated to some pretty good fried fish and the closest thing to authentic British fish and chips the city has to offer.
  12. Excellent English atmosphere, and good clean food.
  13. Great for takeout fried fish and big old fries.
  14. poor food
  15. think the best fish and chips I've had in the city, or maybe tied with Telephone Bar & Grill.
  16. On a beautiful day in nyc great to eat on outdoors me and my husband got fries and fish our fish was delicious great as always but our fries it was a another story very dark and burn.
  17. We first went to an excellent Broadway play and then we took a nice long walk to expect one to have a wonderful seafood dinner.
  18. The best fish n chips this side of the Atlantic
  19. Salt and Battery succeeds at being one of the best, authentic British chippies in Manhattan.
  20. We were both happy with the experience would definitely recommend it to any fried fish lover.
  21. It's actually less greasy than most fish and chip shops, although its certainly not very nutritious, and the fish is fairly fresh for a chippie.
  22. The most authentic fish and chips in New York.
  23. If you are British and you are feeling nostalgic and wanted a bit of home in NYC, save yourself the disappointment and don't ruin the memory of how a nice portion of fish and chips tastes.
  24. The tartar sauce wasn't as good as they said it would be, it was too greasy and bland.
  25. The shrimp and haddock were very bland and the cole slaw was the worst I ever tasted.
  26. Yes it is pricy but its the best fish and chips I've found in the states.
  27. The food is about as good as pub-grub can be; you might be disappointed if you expect anything other than high order takeout.
  28. On the downside: the food can be a bit pricey (an order of cod and chips will run you $7), the portions are 'merely adequate', the food is greasy as they come, the fries are 'chips' not 'pommes frites' meaning they are soggy (though i suppose some people
  29. I've always loved fish and chips and when I saw that A Salt and Battery opened a branch in the East Village, I decided to check it out.

Tried this place out of curiosity

by TardyKat

Came here looking for dessert having dined at nearby Meatball Shop. I'd seen the fried candy bars on the menu once before passing through and figured today was perfect.

My friend and I ordered one each of the fried Mars bar and fried Toffee Crisp. Never had fried candy bars before so our expectations were low.

The filling wasn't burning hot as I thought it would be. The batter cooled down rather quickly. The Toffee Crisp came out better in that there was a crispiness to the melted mush.

Once was enough though as it feels very unhealthy.

Yuk!

by coolit

I was in the mood for fried fish so I thought I drop in on this place. OMG so sorry I did. The fish wasn't seasoned and the chips tasted like they were fried in old oil. Plus it's "way" over priced for unseasoned fish and chips. I would definitely not go there for fried again. Yuk!

Worst Customer Service Ever

by gtfernan

I really wanted to like this place.

The food is okay, but an online ordering experience really put off me off to how poorly the place is run, and the terrible customer service they have.

I placed an order through Seemless. After my 60 min wait time, it never came. After a few phone calls I was told "someone would call me back," which, of course, never happened. I ended up sending an email about it and this was their response:

"We looked into this and we can find no reason why a delivery to an address so near to us would have taken so long particularly when it was a relatively quiet business day for us. We can only suggest that perhaps you were distracted and that your wait was not as long as you originally thought. Please do take it up with Seamless Web if you feel it necessary.

Best regards,

Dewi Williams"

I mean, it's $12--I don't need it, and it's not a big deal. My issue is with them being terrible at customer service and not even acknowledging there was a problem. Them assuming that I was "distracted" is really hilarious; really?

I hope Dewi and the team get their act together, or at least learn basic customer service. If I'm going to get treated like crap, I might as well go somewhere else and at least get better food.

me and my girlfriend came here to get some stuff and now this is her favorite store. I can't get her away from here, and to make it worst we live only 56 blocks away from this place. So she would walk anytime she feels like it, or make me!!! :.( .....
