Editorial Review for Mary's Fish Camp – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Duos on dates and small groups of friends pack like happy sardines into this breezy, always-busy corner spot. Diners at the bar watch busy chefs scoop lobster salad onto warm brioche rolls. Owner Mary Redding keeps things fish camp-y with rod-and-reel rental prices and a list of "rules" on the backs of the menus.

The Food
It's easy, simple, unfussy seafood like you'd find at a roadside shack--that is, if you're really lucky and that roadside shack serves just-set, flash-fried clams and charry-lemony grilled octopus with homemade tartar sauce. And even though the lobster roll is legendary, and deserving of its reputation, it's the seasonal lobster pot pie--a luscious butter and cream diet-buster filled with lobster chunks, peas and topped with buttery puff pastry--that really deserves a cult following. Desserts, like the hot fudge sundae and seasonal pie, follow suit; nothing fancy, but they always hit the spot.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

No hard alcohol, but three draft beers (including Guinness) and a handful of well-matched wines by the glass (poured into small juice glasses) are on offer.

Know Before You Go

Mary's doesn't take reservations, and primetime tables are difficult to come by without a wait. Luckily, Mary's will take your cell phone number and call you when your table is ready.

GREAT, fresh food and our server was friendly and helpful. Delicious mussels with fennel, conch soup was just OK (not much conch) but the lobster rolls were to die for. The guy sitting next to us even ordered four to go! Be ready to wait (ours was about 45 mins) but well worth it. Unlike anything else in the city.

Pros: lobster rolls, fries, service

Cons: no waiting area

Was just there last night, is just as the editorial review states it is PLUS extremely nice waitstaff, unheard of in ny levels of niceness. I was impressed by the food, having sampled the rich lump crab meat gratin and chunky, delish lobster roll. Thumbs up!

Pros: relaxed vibe, friendly waitstaff, tasty food

Cons: small & crowded
