Editorial Review for Snack – by Paul Adams

The Scene
The tiny dining room--with just five tables--is pleasingly like eating in a rustic kitchen: Greek packaged foods decorate the shiny white walls, and customers bustle to and fro. The waitstaff can be brusque when it's busy, but the atmosphere is generally comfortable.

The Food

These are simple, hearty Greek dishes with minimal frills. The appetizers, hot and cold, are especially delicious. Hot, flaky spinach pies and cheese pies burst with comforting buttery flavor, while stuffed grape leaves rouse the palate with brine. A host of dips--chickpea, carp roe, garlic--are complex, pleasing and filling. Entrees impress less: a sweetish, oniony lamb stew is serviceable, though not memorable, and salt-cod cakes could be more flavorful. But a meal of small plates, to go or to stay, is a definite winner.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Due to the diminutive size of the dining room, there's definitely a wait at peak times. Be prepared to cool your heels, show up early, or take your food to-go.

The Extras

In the West Village? Check out Snack's sister restaurant, Snack Taverna.

Everything in this place is wonderful, but the veal meatballs are especially wonderful!!! YUMMY! They melt in your mouth! The service is great, and although small, the place is very comfortable. Also love the vegetarian and lamb sandwiches!

I came upon Snack while shopping solo in SoHo. Upon stepping inside, I decided to take my food to go. I ordered the Vegetarian Souvlaki (not positive about spelling). After making my way to an outdoor table a block away, I started to chow down. I was expecting the sandwich to be warm, but it was cold, and the pita was a bit overstuffed. But after a few bites, I was loving it. The sweet sauce balanced the sharpness of the onions, and the other veggies were delicious. I would definitely reccomend this cozy spot for take out (because of the limited seating). A great find.

Pros: Service

Cons: Space

Small plates excel at this small Soho shop devoted to Greek comfort food.  See the full editorial review.
